Mount an iPad or other tablet computer in dash?

I have heard about other cars doing this. I have even heard that some of them have managed to mount it flat, and at push of button, the tablet slides out, pivots, and raises vertically - kinda like how some stereos have the large screens that do that.

I am assuming there must be a kit for the automated slide feature.

I think an iPad at 9" would be to big for my 2004 TJ center dash, plus I hate apple. ;-)

Im looking at some of the other competitors with 7" models.

Has anyone else looked into this? If so do you mind sharing anything you have come across that might be useful?

Thanks for your time!

7" Android 2.2 tablet with Bluetooth OBD-II Wireless Transceiver and an ODB2 App running on the tablet. I dunno anything about mounting. But the android tablet is much better for this application imo.

Custom Carputers

Lots of info out there on this.

A better option is to mount the actual "computer" elsewhere, and run a video feed to a in dash LCD touch screen for an interface device.

A "carputer" would be your best bet, a google search would show plenty of good info on the subject. In my opinion, mounting a $600-$700 iPad in your dash is begging for someone to bust out a window. Just my two cents.

i have never seen or heard of this "mount it flat, and at push of button, the tablet slides out, pivots, and raises vertically". that would be one hellofa custom install. i have seen several custom mounted in dash but never like that. the mount was more a custom desk for it to sit in and friction and the cables held it in place. the Android tablet is still going to be to large for your dash from what i have heard. its a 7" screen but the entire tablet is larger than that. it could be done but is going to take a LOT of custom work.

a better option is to just buy a cheap laptop or netbook and buy a touch screen. you would need to remove the screen from its case but that would be closer to fitting. there are several writeups over at believe thats the site). another thing is, you dont have the space for a 7" screen stock which is why it would take the customizing to get everything to fit.
