Military Jeep Map Light

I did an interior lighting mod using a mil spec cockpit light. Works pretty good. Here's the write-up

Hey that light is awesome, where did you find yours! I looked on eBay but didn't find one quite like yours.

Edit: I did find a few but they were all over $100. Hmmm....

That's one of the ones I found. Though I'm a pilot and think it'd be cool to have one in my TJ, I'm not sure I (my wife!) is ready to spend that much for a light, as cool as that one is. Dang, I'll keep my eyes open for a good used one. Thanks, you sure planted the bug to get one of those... maybe I'll just buy one and plead for forgiveness.

So it has red and white lighting?

Is it powered by the vehicle or by batteries?

Jerry, that's exactly what I did. My wife just shook her head in disbelief. The light source is a white bulb. A red lense moves into position to provide the red lighting. I wired it up to the non switched auxiliary circuit.

Maybe I am missing something but what is the big advantage of that versus an ordinary map light?

Well whe your driving it doesn't light up the entire jeep so you can read maps kindof like the name emplies. It projects a beam of light downward and you can adjust the pattern and it has a red lens to slide into place...

Ineresting - I was just wondering what makes it better than the cheapo $5 map lights you can buy in Autozone. It sounds like it probably would last more than a week too.

Jerry,

Looks like the map light out of an OV-1B Mohawk. Maybe the Army is parting them out? <g>.

the difference

The difference is that it has a mil spec number, cage code, wrinkle paint finish and above all else-nobody has one that I know of.
