Making the Aux lights come on with the Headlights
First off I would like to say I am completely ignorant when it comes to electrical issues, but I thought if this wasn't too hard I'd give it a shot instead of paying someone outrageous amounts of cash to do it.
So here's the situation: I put some of those cheap Wally World square Baja lights on and rigged them up per instructions. But I figure since I always turn them on when I turn on the headlights and instead of flicking two switches, can I just be lazy and rig the aux lights to come on when I turn on the headlights?

What 2 switches are you talking about?
One for the head lights and one for the fogs? The Fogs should have come with a relay correct? Did you tap into the lights themself from the swith or was it directly to the battery? You're going to want the fogs on their own wires, stock wiring won't be able to handle the additional heat load. I've got my fogs and driving set up so that I can turn them off or on only when the parking lights or low beams are on or when I turn on the Highs for the driving. My windshields are wired so that I can turn them on with only the switch. My reverse can be on when I'm in reverse, off at my choosing, or on by themselves.

the aux lights are connected directly to the battery, haven't intermingled the aux and headlights together. But i want to, so when I turn on the headlights, the aux lights come on too.

Yes you can do that. The proper way to do it is to use a RELAY. You will need a few feet of extra wire too.
A standard Relay will have 5 Pins comming off it. They are labeled using Numbers. 85/ 86/ 87/ 87a/ 30 First run a Nice 12-14 gauge power wire from the Vehicle battery 12+ side. Run That 12+ into the #30 Pin on the relay. Run a ground from any chassie metal to the #86 pin on the relay. Now run a wire from the headlight wire 12+ when turned ON, run that wire to the #85 Pin on the relay. Last hook the AUX lights 12+ wire to the #87 pin on the relay. 87a is NOT used. Now when you flick on the headlights the AUX lights will come on too. But they will be drawing their power from the battery, and NOT the headlight circut. Don't forget to FUSE the main 12V line ![]() Last edited by Jeff91XJ; 02-15-2009 at 10:53 PM.. |

Can I run that 12V line that goes from the battery to the relay through the fuse box?
(I'm sure some of you are laughing by now) |

I don't know of anyway to run it through the stock fuse box. The whole point of that dedicated 12v line to the battery is so that the AUX lights are not drawing too much current through the headlight switch and/or any other circut.
Did the AUX lights com with a relay or anything like that? |

Dude, I have no clue what I'm doing or really what all this extra stuff with fuses and relays and which to get and blah blah blah. Don't worry about it. I dont want to fry anything including myself. If anybody knows a site or thread that has a step by step of what to buy and how to do this, then I might try, but as for now, I'll just wait till I can get somebody to do it for free...

Alright, after cooling down, i think I got it. The only thing I don't quite get now is how to fuse the 12V (battery to relay) wire.

No need to get upset....I wasn't trying to sound like a Jerk...I'm just trying to describe this the best that I can. You won't get Fried Or Shocked I promise If the Aux lights have a fuse in them already then dont worry about adding the other fuse. You need a fuse like this... or ANY inline fuse will work. I have a TON of these fuses extra at the shop. If you give me you address I will ship you one ![]() |

No Sir, I was in no way mad at you. Not at all. I was just getting frustrated with myself and when I do that I get really flustered. You've been way to much help!
Thanks for the help I think I have it now. I'll update later tonight and let you know if everything turned out gravy! |

ALRIGHT! So, I got this all figured out except what wire I hook up to the headlight switch. There's like...a bagillionite of wires coming out of that thing and I have no clue which to hook it to.
The dash is taken off so I can snap a few pictures after I hook everything else up and maybe someone will post a responce in that time. |
