I installed Kicker 6.5" Shallow mount subs in the front kick panels. Carpet over the grill, and they're invisible, but the sound is quite a bit better than I had even hoped for.
I did line the chamber with sound deadening foil/rubber stuff and added some polyfill with spray glue as well. IMO it's the best use of that space, as bass is the least directional of all frequencies, and you can install 5" separates in the dash. ![]() ![]()

wow thats insane.
I have the MOD Pods, they are awesome. When I have the doors off, the sound stays in the jeep. Much louder then I expected. Here are some pics. I am running Alpine SPS500 speakers in them. The Mod Pods are supposed to be screwed into the tub, but I used 3M double back tape so I can easily remove them to clean the carpet. The 3M holds them and they havent moved yet, and the Pods fit perfect. That Q-logic one is nice, but I dont how it would look/ feel with the manual tranny pedal there. Also your foot is in constant contact with it I would think.

Well I have an auto trany so I wouldn't have to worry about the clutch pedal, but yea it does look like it would stick out quite a bit. I was more curious about speaker position/angle and how sound might vary between the pods.. I'm kinda diggin Sarge's idea though and might have to look into doin that, looks like a great way to utilize the limited space in the cab.. Hey Sarge if you have any pics of your driver side I would greatly appreciate it if you would post them.

Yes, I dremel'd the tub and used a 1/2 inch spacer, sealed it with some metal caulk and lined the cavity (extends all the way up toward the windshield) with sound matting, then spray-glued it and dabbed in some polyfill for good measure.
If you do it, also be sure to fill the holes at the base of the cavity (small openings at the bottom of the tub. (They don't look to be intended as 'drain holes', and I don't see any way for water to get down there from above, so I'm pretty sure it's save to fill them. I also checked with my friend who owns a high-end audio store who has done hundreds of these, and he says no water problems, no reason not to plug the holes). Took a little time, but a very good result. ![]()

It's very similar to the set-up of a competitor andy jones. He has a midbass cut into the metal kick panel. His is in an altima so there's a plastic trim panel over it. Excellent install.
Did you do the driver's side as well? |

Do you know if those Mod Pods accept a 6 1/2 speaker?
I wrote to Q-logic and they told me that there is plenty of clearance for the clutch pedal. They added that they have had nothing but positive feedback on the product, for what that's worth. A bit pricey, though. |

You can find the q logic kicks on ebay for cheaper if you desire. You can also check out crutchfield a few times a year, they sometimes offer a deal when you buy 6.5" speakers at the same time. There's always the option of fiberglassing your own if you have the time and space to work.

I had found them on ebay before but maybe the store stopped carrying them.
I see they changed them a bit...(I had a local saved pic from when I considered them) the woofer sits further back on the floor now. I always figured the back of the kick was too open and it would just sound as bad as the dash speakers. As for the mod pods...I had modified a set for use in my YJ and I hated them and got a centra pod instead. They just seemed to be in a bad location. |
