Issues With HID's --- Do I need a relay?
Got these HID's off ebay to put in my 05 grand cherokee 4.7:
HID H7 8000K XENON CONVERSION KIT MAZDA 3 03 04 05-08 - eBay (item 250733363923 end time Dec-27-10 02:57:54 PST)
They work when the car has been sitting, but if you shut them off after they have been working they wont turn back on. They also work if I unplug the power to the ballast and plug it back in.
If it is a relay I need, does this mean I need to use a toggle switch instead of my normal light controls? That would be a huge pain.
Can anyone recommend HID's that do work, and dont need some relay to work that are still affordable?

Lemme go down my thought process. First, I really hope you didnt throw those in the factory housings. Something tells me you did but Im not going to go into that and assume you have proper projector headlights set up. Otherwise itll get you some flaming here on the forum and you best just fix it subtly. Xentec is a good brand though, they have some respect they make good products. Im also guessing you just decided to plug them straight into the factory wiring. Strike 2. Dont use factory wiring for HIDs, the power is not consistent enough and the ground cannot be trusted. The wiring is thin as well. I wouldnt be surprised if this is your problem as well. If the wire is not up to the task and you're overusing them the wire will heat up to a point where the resistance is too much for the ballast to get a proper voltage or ground and it will not ignite. Hopefully thats your problem. As a side note, HIDs are NOT meant to be flicked on and off at your own leisure. When you turn them on leave them on for a couple minutes. When you turn them off leave them off for a couple minutes and allow the ballasts and bulbs to cool down. Flicking HIDs is not good. Thats why many Lexus vehicles have halogen high beams or proper HID setups use bixenon setups that fire off a solenoid and flip up a lens shield for high beams so the original bulb does not shut off its just allowed to shine higher.
So for your harness you dont need a separate switch dont worry. Wire terminal 30 to the battery with a fuse, probably 20a or so and use 14ga wire at least. Then wire terminal 87 to the ballasts. 85 and 86 get wired to the headlight lowbeam wires (order doesnt really matter) so that when the headlight would normally turn on it will activate the relay that will feed the HID ballasts. Ground each individual ballast to the nearest available body ground where you have mounted your ballast. And yes, the ballast does need to be mounted securely. Having it bouncing around and taking vibrations will kill ballasts pretty quick.

What do you mean "proper projector headlights"? Its wrong to just take the bulbs they give you and put them where the stock ones were? I am having the guy send me a relay, I am assuming this does the same concept as what you described.
BTW, thanks for the in depth help!

HIDs need to be installed in projector housings otherwise they create a BAD glare because the light beam is not controlled correctly

No problem
Basically to put it simply about the housings, the filaments for the HIDs are a little bit longer. They sit in a different position from stock normally and they reflect differently off of the factory housings in a way that will direct glare towards other drivers' eyes. On top of blinding the other drivers it will also throw off your light beam and you wont get all that you can out of them. Projectors will focus the HID beam in the direction they belong. They're expensive, but theyre worth it, and theyre the law using HIDs in relfector housings can get you red tagged and a fixit ticket
