iPod Touch (1st gen) & Mopar iPod integration kit compatibility?

Hi all,

Does anyone on here have a 1st gen iPod touch and a Jeep or other Chrysler/Dodge vehicle with a Mopar iPod integration kit? If so, I'd like to know if your 1st gen touch charges properly and if track names/artist info shows up on your display. I'm considering getting a refurb 1st gen touch, but won't waste my time if it doesn't work properly.

A co-worker has a 2nd gen (current) iPod touch and I tried it in my DD (Dodge Stratus with an RB1 radio and a Mopar iPod kit) one day at lunch and no-go on the charging and and display functionality. It did play, but it was irritating not being able to scroll through playlists, or see any track/artist/album info. I've heard that Apple did something to the 2nd gen touch that makes it incompatible with some earlier accessories, so I want to see if the same is true for a 1st gen model......?

Thanks in advance....

I would hope the mopar kit wouldnt run inot this problem, but all the aftermarket Chrysler adapters would work on anything BUT the wrangler. Last time i called metra about it, they were "working" on it. Have you looked into just grabbing an aftermarket unit with ipod control?

Thanks for the responses, but some clarification: This isn't for my Jeep - it's for my DD - a Dodge Stratus. That said, all of the Chrysler radios are common between models, so I was hoping someone on here had some direct experience with their Jeep or other ChryCo product.

To the poster who suggested buying an aftermarket radio - no insult intended, but please re-read my post - I have an RB1 factory nav radio...I'm not interested in an aftermarket radio. I prefer the subtle look of a factory radio. Virtually every aftermarket radio is far too "gimmicky" looking in my opinion and clearly targeted at teenagers or people well under 30 (unfortunately I'm far from that now) with all the silly splash screens and dancing lights...no thanks. Even Blaupunkt, the last outpost for serious looking radios, went glitzy years ago.

Also, I don't currently have the artist/song cable, but I don't seem to need it - my 5th gen iPod video works perfectly and displays artist/song/album title/genres/playlists/etc and even charges properly with the RB1 and the Mopar integration kit.

I would just like to know if the 1st gen Touch will function in the same manner as my 5th gen video. I know for a fact that unfortunately the 2nd gen Touch won't from personally trying one belonging to a co-worker. I also gather from what I've read that Apple made some changes to the 2nd gen model that rendered some older cables/accessories/etc useless, so I'm hoping that the 1st gen Touch is more like my old video iPod from a compatibility perspective.....anyone? Bueller...Bueller.....

Thanks again....

I am really curious about this, too. I have an 06 KJ Liberty with an RBQ HU and the Sirius box. I would like to use my current (new @ Christmas) 160 gig Ipod Classic in my Jeep, but have learned that Apple has a new chip in this latest generation of Ipods that makes them compatible only with devices that also include the new matching Apple chip. (nice, huh?) I don't want to go to all the trouble to install the Mopar Ipod Integration Kit, only for it not to integrate MY ipod.

So, have any of you plugged a newest Ipod into you KJ with the Mopar Integration kit and had it not work right?

Holy ancient thread Batman!

The "newest" iPod I've tried is a 2nd gen touch, and I know it doesn't work...the first gen does, since I went ahead an bought one and took the risk.

My understanding of the issue is that Apple changed the charging/communication protocol from being firewire based (in spite of the older iPods coming with a USB terminated cable - go figure) to true USB based. Since older iPods (except for maybe the really old ones) like my 5th gen video and my 1st gen touch came with a usb cable to sync with the computer (irrespective of the communication protocol), I fail to see how this sudden change benefitted anyone other than Apple and the various companies that make accessories for iPods. I don't know if USB 2.0 is faster than firewire (I suspect it may be, hence the change), but in the grand scheme of things, how much does some minor improvement in sync speed really matter? They could also argue that firewire is quickly fading away and most computers don't come with a firewire port anymore, but again, since older iPods shipped with a USB cable how does that matter?

Nope - my first gen touch works perfectly with the mopar kit - displays all the song/album/playlist/etc data just fine. None of the firmware updates I've made to the ipod affected it's operation in the vehicle, although one of updates (maybe it was os 3.0? I'm not sure) did seem to slow the whole ipod down, especially when scrolling through podcasts.

thanks for the reply, also how do you navigate music on your ipod through the stereo controls...not too familiar with ipod folder structure, but if you have all your music seperated in folders can you navigate to a particular song or can you only play playlists or something? just want to know if I should buy something big enough for all my music or just stick with big enough for a few playlists.

You can navigate to individual artists, albums, genres or songs, but the ease of doing so depends on which radio you have and how much information it displays. Having said that, it is easier to work with playlists. I tend to primarily listen to podcasts in the car, so I don't play around with searching for individual songs very often if at all.
