coil good, distributor cap good, spark plug wires good, all circuits appear to be working properly, could it be the electric control unit?

DO YOU HAVE POWER AT THE COIL? just because its good does not mean its getting power. if it were and you have fuel going in then it should start. start with where you have power and go from there.

if you have power to the coil and the coil test good then do you have an ignition control module? it will either be in the dis cap or there abouts. they go bad and can cause the same issue. i know nothing about the older dis's on jeeps.

If its a Prestolite distributor and you're not worried about originality this might be a good time to go with an HEI or other "one wire" distributor. Easy to hook up, simple to troubleshoot. Might be worth a search. Good luck.

tested the negative, returned with a result that the ignition module needed replacement, now the engine is firing only when i let the key off the ignition and not maintaining, could this be solenoid wiring now?

Does it have a ballast resistor? If memory serves it does...and they are infamous for creating a "runs while the key is held, stops when the key is released".
