Help...Check Engine Light??

Hello,

In IL you have to get your emissions tested in order to get your plates renewed. You can't pass the emissions test if the check engine light is on. So, I was wondering if anyone could help me diagnose the cause of the check engine light (so I don't get screwed by the mechanics) or, just tell me how to clear the error?

Thanks

Download the trouble codes with an OBD-II code reader, write them down, and use the Google to decipher them. Most auto parts stores will loan you a code reader.

You should be able to flip the ignition back and forth (don't start it) and on the third time keep it forward. You Pcodes should show up on you odometer. You should be able to find them here or google it.

OK. I got that. But, I am wanting to know how to reset the light. Is there a computer reset button for the diagnostic system?

You can unhook the battery but the light may come back on.

Most of the code readers with clear the codes. Again most autoparts stores will do this for you. Provided the codes are fixed the light will stay off. IF not it will come back on anywhere from 10-30 seconds.

Fix the problem, the light will go out.

OK, Tim...the issue here is that the mechanics are going to try to pull one over on me...saying they need to fix more than that. So I just want to kill the light so I can pass emissions.

If you have to pass emissions inspection, whatever is causing the Check Engine Light, will still show up in the test, and you will fail. Find out what the problem is, it may be a simple fix.

From my experience me the codes that mention an evap leak have been fixed by replacing the gas cap. This is from the TJ section but I would think the codes would be the same.

Why don't you google them yourself? It you can't fix, then come back for help....... Most are a simple fix anyway.

Because I'm feeling generous...

P0442 - EVAP leak - most likely tighten your gas cap.
P0456 - EVAP leak - hose not connected, canister leak
P0523 - Oil pressure sensor - High voltage... probably bad or a short. If your gauges work maybe a misfire.
P0455 - EVAP leak - Do you even have a gas cap?

THe EVAP codes should clear. The oil pressure sensor will be a little more difficult.

The oil pressure thing...one time the gauge just went all the way down to zero. Then turned off the vehicle and restarted. Gauge has read normal ever since. Weird.

One other thing. Not Jeep related, but in my other vehicle..a dodge grand caravan...the TPMS light comes on. I have filled all the tires to the appropriate pressure as indicated on the door panel. It still won't clear. What gives?
