Hardwire and Permanently Mount Garmin
I have a Garmin Nuvi 255W that I'm wanting to hardwire and permanently mount somewhere on my dash. I've read a few threads about this but nothing gives me what I'm needing exactly and I've got a few questions.

Since I'm wanting switched power (power when the ignition is on only), is it best to splice the existing power outlet or not? If not, what is the best method? I'm wanting to just install a female power outlet so that I can just plug in the existing Garmin power cable and make it easier to upgrade in the future. I didn't want to just get in there and do something that could overload the fuse since I'm new to this whole vehicle electronics part.

As for mounting, does anyone have pros/cons about mounting it in various locations? Also, what did you use to permanently mount your GPS? I've thought about different places but I'm trying to minimize the unit blocking my view of the road. Pictures would be awesome.

As far a power goes, the link below shows a "add a circuit" device I have used many times on different vehicles. No cutting/splicing. I am using it right now in my Jeep and tahoe for an extra outlet. Just find a switched fuse circuit, remove the "host" fuse, then plug this in with old and new fuse.

Most car parts stores have them $5 or so.

I have a 13 jk and used Kydex to make a gps mount to fit on the grab bar.

first thing you have to do is make sure it is 12v. most things with a cig adapter actually have voltage reducers built into the plug.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not cutting the plug off the GPS power adapter. I'm just wanting to put a hidden 12v outlet behind the dash that the charger can plug into. As for mounting, I'm really wanting to put it more in the "driver" zone. Either in the top left corner of the windshield or somewhere on the dash or above the rear view mirror. Just not sure of mounting hardware for those areas.

The time now is 10:46 PM.
