Electrical question, I guess

Bought one of those "easy" connects for the 4 prong trailer light flat plug. Did what the directions said and hooked it into the passenger side. Got one light to blink. Took out my meter and the wire from the jeep (w/the 4 ways on) gives a good strong blink on the one and practically nothing on the other(holding the black probe on the ground and sticking the red probe in the 3 holes on the flat plug).
I thought maybe the Hoppie connecter I bought was bad BUT it appears to be a problem in the wire from the back end of the Jeep.

Any ideas?? I need to be able to drag my trailer time-to-time.

Is the "easy" connect one of those that uses the blue plastic crimp-on wire connectors?

Do the turn signal/brake lights on your Jeep work correctly? Or is it just the flat 4-wire trailer connector that is giving you problems?

Either way, you need to check out where you connected the wires. Take off the passenger side tail light and see if you can pull the break through the hole. You may need to solder the wires and cover with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape.

Actually the easy connect from Hoppie is/was so easy. All you do is reach up in the fender uncouple the connecters the Hoppie plugs right in "as stock" and you are supposed to be done.
Problem was it doesn't work and I can not localize the problem. When I took it to the other side I could get both trailer lights to blink (reversed) and the one blinked twice as fast as it is supposed to.

sometimes you need to get a new "flasher thingy"- under the dash-
friggin cant remember what their called! arghhh!!!

anyhow- upgrade to the big one. The little ones dont have enough juice to make it all work sometimes....hazard flasher thingy in the fuse panel...friggin brains on a vacation here....food..I need food!

if I remember right- one wire for parking lights, one for brakes, and two for signals....sometimes one for a ground, sometimes not. try running a simple ground from the bumper to the frame on the trailer for fun...see if it does anything.

Theres always a wire for ground along with a marker light wire and right and left turn wire. Braking just energizes both turns.

both the old style flat 4 Ive had didnt have ground wires per se- it supposedly grounded through the hitch itself-- hence we always add a black wire ground from the hitchbolt to the bumperbolt with a quicky connect for added "groundeness"

the last one I hooked up for mom an pop on their Grand cherokee had 4-- two turns/ one for brake/ one for parking-- if you wiggle`d the slide-in hitch, the lights would flicker. A simple addin ground wire solved it. Done it befo- i`ll do it again.

the newer ones Ive seen can come both ways- I like the barrel plugs myself. they llok cooler, and can be mounted instead of a chunk of dangleing plastic.

You probably got it solved

but if not............. This is my input. First, on all vehicles I've dealt with to memory 1) Brown wire is tail lights (running lights) 2) Green is right turn/Stop 3) Yellow is left turn/Stop. So did all the lights work on the Jeep to start with? Is the problem showing up with the trailer connected (wired up)? Use the meter to check each wire to a ground. Voltages should be roughly the same from wire to wire. Do this without the trailer. If all is good it points to the trailer, usually a loose bulb or wire. BTW the trailer lights are notorious for problems.

The white wire on the 4-prong is a ground; if you have a separate brake circuit, it should be run through one of the diode boxes to energize the turn signals on braking : This generally comes into play when you've got yellow turn signals on the vehicle, thus separate from the brake lights : If you'll look at the bulbs on the trailer, there's only two elements: one running light, one turn/brake: they've got to be "tied together" to work.

Thanks to all for the help. The Final solution turned out to be - Threw out the directions that came with the Hoppie pack. Those directions said hook it up on the Pass side.
I hooked it up on the drivers side, cut the two wires (L and R) reversed them and now it works great.
