Wj Double Din Nav Install

I am going to install this into the factory radio location of my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...sh/AVIC-F900BT

Here is ghetto flip up LCD currently installed:

Removed fascia and pulled existing radio and cut out the top of the radio bracket this includes the attachment at the edge of the dash and the two clips that hold the top of the fascia on:

Here is the stuff I cut out:

Put existing radio back in and fascia still looks original so you can easily put stock back into sell and buy a new fascia from JY:

While waiting for new unit to arrive, should be Thursday, Friday at the latest, I fabbed up some aluminum brackets:

Started with flat crafters aluminum sheets from hardware store, 10" x 4" x 0.032"

Made two side by bending them at right angles with 1" front and 5 3/4" sides, made two of these. To give it lateral strength I made a bottom plate that is 7" wide and has to sides each 1 1/8" tall. Have not drilled any holes, will do that once unit is arrived and I can fit it all in the dash and align it.

Couple of pictures of the preliminary frame to mount the nav unit:

Here is the install of the unit. Trimmed sides to fit unit, drilled holes in mounts, wired it up and slipped it in.

Speak softly and carry a big stick.

This will detail the finishing of the fascia once the radio is installed.

Here is what I started with now for some glass:

some glass, plastic and a lot of sanding later it is getting close

Some finishing sanding and some paint and it will be done. Will add those when it is dry.

looking nice, will this fit without obstructing the heat and AC vents?

Over the summer I am trying to get a new WJ so if this works for you, I'll give it a shot myself because I personally love that headunit, it does EVERYTHING and gives a nice integrate look over the "ghetto" flip-ups

my plan is to leave the heat/ac vents in as is. Might have to use a heat gun to reform a couple of tight spots but hoping not and initially it looks like it iwll all fir with just cutting the top out of the radio area which is all I have done so far then of course cutting the fascia up but those are cheap at a junk yard to replace.

on thought i had about doing this... if you remove the aluminum from the existing facia (it will peel off with pliers if you sort of "roll" it off), it shaves off a bit of thickness which could perhaps then be replaced with a custom cut piece of thin metal that you cut the correct new shaped opening out of. thereby allowing you to re-use the existing bezel with vents and mounting system with only minor fab?

of course if you know glass well, then i'm sure you'll be able to fab something up from scratch that looks great!

good luck, watching with anticipation!

so it sticks out quite a bit further forward, or do you just not have it all the way back in the last picture with the bezel?

subscribing.

i think its going to come out pretty damn nice.

Installing HID's in stock housings is bad. Here is why.

yes it does stick out, but most of them do, I am trying to bring the fascia out to blend with plastic and fiberglass. This was somewhat required do to the angle of the head unit, if the top edge was flush the bottom edge would be set back in the fascia.
