DIY: TJ stock to aftermarket speaker adapter

This is what I did. I didnt want to buy the aftermarket kind when I could make a perfectly good one myself. Since the old stock speakers are crap, I cut them up. This is my picture guide to how I did/am doing it.

I just obviously started with the stock speaker

With a sawzall and a table vice I made quick work of it

Shows where exactly I cut here

As you can see my speaker wont fit in the stock holes

So, I very carefully pried up the old crap off the metal brace

And now that its free, it fits perfecly

Just used some nuts and bolts to attach it. Works great, but I did have to cut off the rest of the bolt on the two inside corners, because they contact the metal bracing inside the dash. So on the drivers side I had to cut the right hand side bolts, and on the passengers side I had to cut the left hand side corner bolts

I hope I can save someone else some money like I did, and DIY it. Any questions just holler away.

Edit-
I have a 1999 TJ Sport, and thanks to "CF" Post five this thread
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f20/speaker-wire-polarity-13509/

I was able to determine the polarities, because a test light lights on both the positive an the negative wire. So this guide matches up perfectly to my two front speakers

Quote:
I found this on the net. It could be wrong but if colors match your harness. ...

DODGE/CHRYSLER

P o w e r
Memory (+12v Constant) Red/White
Ignition (+12v Switched) Red
Ground (-) Black or Braided Silver Wire
Illumination Orange
Dimmer (none)
Power Antenna Yellow
S p e a k e r s
Right Front (+) Violet
Right Front (-) Blue
/Red (mine was blue, not red just fyi)
Left Front (+) Green
Left Front (-) Brown/Red

Right Rear (+) Blue/White
Right Rear (-) Blue/Red
Left Rear (+) Brown/Yellow
Left Rear (-) Brown/Red

And I don't really understand the instructions to their polarity test, but if you do, here it is,,,

* To check speaker polarity (assuming you don't have a polarity tester): Touch (for a very short period of time) one wire to the positive side of a 1.5-volt battery (AA or C size), and the other wire to the negative side. If speaker "pops out", then polarity is correct. If speaker "pops in" then polarity is reversed. Use a meter to make sure that the wires you are going to check for speakers do not have any power.
