Custom CB install in Overhead console on '01 XJ WARNING lots of pics!!!!

Well my CB came in today, a Cobra 19DX III. I got this one simply for mild trail use, and for its small size because I wanted to do a nice install. I cut the pics down ALOT so that low bandwidth could view them more easily, and I think they just look nicer small.

Heres a pic of the CB before the install.

Here is a picture of the center console upside down, with all of the parts intact.

Here is the same pic but with the backing piece that houses the flapper door for the garage door opener holder, and the sunglasses holder (the backing piece uses 6 T-10 torx screws) . Both of which got removed to make way for the CB. Im in college and dont have a garage and my sunglasses dont fit in the holster so I didnt need nor use either of these features. Also, the way that I modified the piece would allow me to reinstall everything except for one plastic piece. Both parts would still function properly after the removal of that piece, therefore I went ahead with it.

Now here is the aforementioned piece that was removed. I cut it as flush as I could so that the fact its gone isnt even noticeable once the CB is installed.

Here it is with the piece cut away, ready for the CB and backing piece to be reinstalled.

This pic shows the bulk of the work that was actually done, in terms of modifying any stock parts. For starters, the big white rectangle is the stock velcro that is used to hold up ones garage door opener. The black arrow points to the notch in the backing piece that I had to cut out for accomodation of the antenna connection into the back of the CB. The blue arrows point at 3 plastic posts that had to be cut off to sit appropriately on the ridges, which are inside of the yellow "circle." The red outline is of the Mounting plate that came with the CB. What I did was use the self tapping screws that come with the CB to mount the plate, I screwed them right through the plastic backing piece, and then cut their ends flush with the other side(top) of the backing piece so as not to snag the headliner upon reinstallation. The CB is now ready for installation onto its mounting piece.

Here is the CB once installed in the backing piece, waiting to be put back into the console. The black arrow indicates where the cutout was made for the antenna attatchment.

Heres a right side up pic of the CB mounted in the backing piece before installation.

Here is the CB from the back and bottom, mounted in the console. Red arrow shows where the antenna Coax goes. The rest of the cable does a 180 and gets routed along the inside of the passenger side of the console. The green arrows point at the power and ground cables coming out of the CB. These I simply cut right after the fuse, and soldered into the power and ground for the overhead lights. This is nice, because the power to them is always on, therefore the CB can be used even when the car isnt running, or you dont have the key, good for emergencies etc. The only downside being that one may on occasion forget to turn it off when the car gets shut off!

Well, they wouldnt let me post it all at once, so heres some more!

Once the CB was mounted to the backing piece, via the supplied mount, all that was left to do was mount the backing piece back into the console with the 6 origional torx screws. Piece of cake! Here are a couple shots of the finished product before installation in the car.

Now onto the car pics. Here is a pic of the headliner with the console removed, you can see the outline of it pressed into the fabric headliner. This shot is taken from the middle of the back seat.

Here I had to remove the OH SH** handle, it uses two T-25 torx screws. Just pry off the end caps, and the screws are exposed. Taking this off allowed me to get the trim pieces out of the way.

This next pic is of the trim where the headliner meets the top of the drivers side rear door. The black arrow points to the trim that is metal, and the red one to the trim that is plastic. I was able to pop the trim loose from its mounts, and bend the pieces enough until they seperated at their junction just above the B-pillar. This made it easy to pull the headliner down enough to fish the cable through.

The cable is routed straight from where you see it coming out above the trim, to the hole where the rear of the center console goes, as is demonstrated here. The excess coax cable I just stuffed up into the headliner, and you cant tell its there! I was scared about that one , but it worked out great.

AND FINALLY, here is the end of it! Hope you all like it!

Now just plug back in the two connections for the electrical and pop the center console back in, theres a "flap" at the rear, that the console slides onto to hold itself up(just above where the pair of lights are for the back seat, top of pic). And there are two screws that hold the front on(right near where the sun visors snap into the center console. Then you just push up firmly on the center of the console and it snaps into the two press fitings, VOILA, YER DONE!!!

Here is a pic of where I chose to mount the holster for the CB's mic, it keeps the cable taut, out of the way, and I can still open the center console.

FINALLY, its all done. Here is a pic of the whole thing assembled and ready to hit the trails! IMHO it almost looks like it was a factory option, you have to see it in real life to see justice done!

Digging up an old thread here...

Atl-atl - I have a couple questions about your install and your PM box is full.

Did you have any problems with hooking the CB power to the light circuit? Any noise in the CB, etc?

Do you still have the full size pics available?

Is the dangling mic cord a hassle? I'm thinking of trying to run an extension cable back up the front of the console to the windshield, then down along the A pillar and behind the dash. I'll connect the mic there and just bring it back under the dash near the center pod somewhere.

Can you hear the CB clearly/ loud enough?

Thanks for the writeup!
