ya, there good. I bought a high $$ one the first time, and it NEVER worked. So I bought the cheapest (well almost the cheapest ) and it works great.

be sure to get is set up (tuned) to your antenna for best results.

I'm never to far away from everyone in my group (maybe 1/4-3/4 mile). So I didn't bother tunning it and it still sounds great. If it blows, so what, I'll get another one for $39.95.

I edited my earlier post a little.

Well ant.'s are like everything else in Jeeping. Everone has a favorite. I've heard a lot of good things about the fire, and K40 ant.'s.

I pers. went with a whip sytle (around 102") . I have both a fiber, and metal antenna. The fiber can break if hit hard where the metal won't. But I go a good deal at Radio Shack on the ant.'s (2 fiber and 1 metal) and mounting hardware. So if I do break one I have plenty more. But I've hit/bent/tweeked my fiber one and it's never broke.

My understanding is a whip style gives you really good results for not too much money. Sure there's better ones out there but not for $5-10 each. And I've also read if your radio isn't match (tuned) to you ant it can hurt your cb.

So, CB (39.95) Walmart, Ant ($5-10) Radio Shack, Mounting hardware (I think is under $10) also at Radio Shack. Like I said, I didn't tune mine and is work great, but you can get it done for around $26 bucks. I'm just too lazy.

To tune them you move the ant. up or down in the mount.

You'll need to buy a SWR meter to make sure you get it right. They run $19.99 at Radio Shack, I bought one, but you have to buy an addit. cable (which I didn't want to do, again, too lazy ) to use it. If you spend a little more money on the radio (about 50-60 bucks) some have this feature built in.

Things to look for, well Jeeps vibrate a lot on the trail. So the more crap (gadgets) it has the more can go wrong. But I like the sign meter, it tells you how for or close you are to who's talking. It's a nice feature(SP). Some have little boosters, PA, aux. speaker connections (I like this one) and a ton of other stuff as the price goes up. But if you go cheap you won't get any of these.

Hope I'm making sense, I'm not proof reading.

That's almost like what I have. If you have a Walmart around it's in the automotive section for under $40.00.

But if I was going to buy another I'd def. get the one you posted. It's the same as mine but that one has the sign meter I was telling you about.

Get a nice ant. get it tuned and it'll do great. A low end cb, good cable, good ant, will go alot further than just a good radio.

Oh, another thing.

My first radio was a lot bigger (it had ton's of stuff on it). I've mounted it under my ash tray. It was also 3x's the weight of my current cb and my dash panel was stressed with all that weight hanging from it. On bumpy trails it would move up and down over an 1"-2" just from the weight, not good.

Mine has a speaker under it, most do. And I think mine is a Unid.

Time for me to go home, I'll check on this post tomorrow.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey Allan,
During my evacuation week, I spent some time talking to the owner of this CB shop in Mesa... Great source of info! Basically said the same thing Dan is sayin'... scimp on the radio, buy the best antenna and tune the heck outta it...

Anyway, this guy has some new Unidens like the ones he used in his own TJ... [Uniden 510 I think? ] along with the Firestick II and 18 feet of coax for the best performance on cheap funds!
If I remember right, the whole package was 'round $80...

Give him a call if ya want:
CB EXCHANGE
6336 E. Main
Mesa, AZ 85205
480-844-7200
PS: he ships worldwide, so his prices must be good.

Don't ask me! I just post what my dog [Emma] tells me to.
