CB Radios...Why?
We have cell phones, the hand held talk-about type things and a myriad of other communications devices between vehicles, is there a valid reason for fuggling up your interior with one of these? Seems kinda 1970's. I understand with a sh!tload of rigs on a big run yeah but is that it? or am i missing something on this? Thanks.

I couldn't figure that out either. I had thought CBs were getting scarce like VCRs!

CB's are still the cheapest most efficient way to communicate with others on the road or trail... It's standardized, no licence needed, easy to install, no additional fee's (unlike cell), better range in most areas then even FRS. That's Why!

Because some people would not consider it "fuggling up your interior"
Because they work everywhere and anywhere. Because they are universally interchangeable, just get together, pick a channel & go! Because you never have to exchange cell phone numbers. Because logging trucks have them too, it adds a level of safety when sharing the roads with these big boys Because the range is way way better than any hand held FRS Radio Because it works. and for extra credit because you can listen or even talk to trucks on the interstate at 4am while finishing a 15hr drive, very amusing at times Rivka Currently running an UHF Radio - Kenwood TK880 25W and a CB - Cobra 19DXIV getting my Ham next month

Because once you start offroading with other Jeeps, you'll be unable to talk with anyone else since CBs are the preferred method for communicating. Once you get out of the city, you'll find cellphones don't work well in truly remote areas where the good offroading is.

Cellphones aren't very good for the group communications either... also I can't imagine cellphone coverage is very good on most of the good trails out west.
I know cell coverage at Paragon was pretty crappy the first time I was there, inside the park I could only get a signal at the top of the Pipeline. Though it has gotten much better.

Some valid points made. lol
<quote> Well i reckon the big thing is cost, cb's are cheap for the most part and the service is free, unlike cell phones and you dont have to have a liscense to use them like ham radio. Another plus is you can talk to anyone with in several miles of you at once, unlike with a cell phone. Another big plus is a cb will work where a cell wont, like in the mountians or in the middle of nowhere, where there are no cell towers. Personally I wont own a cell phone because I dont like them, is there a valid reason for fuggling up your belt or pocket with one of them? Or am I just missing something?</unquote> Don't get me wrong here,i just wanted to know what the spectrum of reasoning would be. What's more the norm now, buying handheld or fuggly? |

Can't add much to what has already been shared. I can certainly think of more reasons to have one than not. But if you don't want one, don't get one. No skin off our back. Buddy of mine used to feel the same way you guys do.

![]() Just think, no hidden taxes to pay, no signing or long term committments, no roaming charges, no limit on minutes, and best of all, you get to gab with friends all the time without having to worry about if you have range or battery life. If that's 70's, then I'm there. Where's my bell bottoms??? ![]() ![]() |

1. I drive a lot on major highways (at least 5 or 6 days out of the week and its usually for an hour or more each way), and having a CB allows me to listen to truckers complaining about traffic problems, giving me a heads up, so if possible I can skip that. 2. My CB is never out of range from a tower and so long as my battery in the Xj is running so is my CB. My cell phone(s) cut in and out and unfortunately they sometimes cut out on this one long stretch of 663 thats nice and lonesome at 12am when I am out driving on it. Granted at that hour no ones probably gonna hear me on my CB cept that friendly trooper who tends to nab me for speeding if they even still have CBs. 3. Its a Jeep Thing you wouldnt understand & I am redneck at heart (now if only I can find dual whip antennas).

None of the guys in my group carry squat most of the time, just wheel and whatever happens, happens. You just gotta try to find a better line than buddy in front of you did without the heads up from any technology. Besides it's nice just hearing the Jeep and no lips a flappin. lol Is there a standard channel everyone uses like a base or flick and listen? |
