Where were you when I was stuck in Leesburg for a month between Feb. and March? To answer your question, it depends on what you want to do with it. If you just want to talk to your buddy's on the trail, a small Cobra will cost probably less than $50 for the radio alone. Then you need a decent antenna. Most guys will tell you to get a firestik, but I bought my cheapo 4 foot Firestik clone in a truck stop. It gets about 1.2 to 1.8 SWR, which is just for me.

Basicly what Mr.B said...

I would stick to a Uniden for teh CB no matter what I intended to do with it.

Small CBs like the Uniden 510 or 520, are easier to mount in a compact Jeep interior, if you have the room or just want a larger CB go to a higher end Uniden 68 or other models, there are a few.

Go here and look under Mobile CBs: http://www.walcottcb.com/

The main things:

1) Decide where you want to mount the CB, find a CB that fits your space.

2) Buy the best Antenna (Wilson or FireStik)

3) Buy the best Coax (Belden RG-8X) this is a little overkill for a CB setup but it will give you good perfromance and the price isn't that much more than RG-58U (which would work OK too).

4) Buy or make a good solid Antenna Mount.

5) Ground the Mount to the Frame using an additional Ground Strap (make sure to get to bare metal where ever you attach)

6) Power the CB directly from the battery, both the red and black wires. Add an in-line fuse to at least the red wire as close to the battery as possible.

7) Tune the Antenna for lowest SWR (either get a meter and do it yourself or have ssomeone do it for you) this is a must. 1.5 or lower is OK but the lower the better.

That should do it, luck, take your time.
