CB Radios

I'm looking to buy a new CB Radio for my TJ. I started researching them, cause I'm anal and have to know all I can about a subject before I buy. I like the compact Cobra 19 DX IV Radio and think it would be a great fit. Anyone have one of these radios and have any comments to share? If so please tell me what kind of antenna you are using (fiberglass, length, brand name, mounting location, connecting cable?) Thanks

I have the Uniden pro 510 XL, that is a great little radio. I did a little research before i bought one and this one rated higher then the cobras. About 30 years ago i did have a few cobra radios and back then they were pretty good .... just decided to try this one because of the ratings. I have the radio mounted in the jeep with a Arizona Rocky Road Radio mount... that is a sweet mount. For the Antenna i have a wilson 3 footer mounted above the right rear tail light.

Heres a couple of pics to show you... the 1st pic is from the Arizona Rocky Road website, the other pic is my jeep.

Oh ... except for the rado mount i bought all the stuff from a local truck stop... they have about everything you need to put in a CB radio.

I'm guessing that you either don't wheel that thing or you just don't have any woods in the area you wheel. That antenna would last all of 5 minutes on my jeep.

I would avoid the small cobras myself, I've seen to many crap out. I do however run a big one(29ltd) in my big truck and love it. The Uniden is a great and reliable radio, no worries there.

Great antenna, unfortunately the Radio Shacks around here carry absolutely nothing cb related in their stores. Even changed their name to "The Shack"

Have you been to North Dakota? I have to travel about 75 miles east to get to some woods in Minnesota and I don't really know if North Dakota has any trees. There are some trees around the lakes and rivers but not many.... pretty much all farm land around here.

Unfortunately, a shack usually refers to a Ham Shack.
Which is what made them big to begin with.

Quote:
The company was started as Radio Shack in 1921 by two brothers, Theodore and Milton Deutschmann, who wanted to provide equipment for the then-nascent field of amateur, or ham, radio.[3] The brothers opened a one-store retail and mail-order operation in the heart of downtown Boston on Brattle Street, near the site of the Boston Massacre. They chose the name "Radio Shack," which was the term for a small, wooden structure that housed a ship's radio equipment. The Deutschmanns thought the name was appropriate for a store that would supply the needs of radio officers aboard ships, as well as "ham" radio operators. The term was - and is to this day - used by "hams" when referring to the location of their equipment.

Now it's cell phone shack...

Ebay or just do a search on your favorite search engine. I can just tell you to stay clear of Premiere Electronics....
Cobra and Uniden are good units. You can even search for reviews on particular models that you may have interest in. I just picked up a Cobra 29LTD for 50 bucks (ebay). There are newer versions available nowadays, but I didn't want to go too fancy in the heep. Good luck and I think you will be pleased with either brand listed above. I too stay away from the compact units. I had one years ago and it worked fine for local stuff, but then I got more into CB radio and the locals as well as the commuters.
I say read the reviews, and read many! Good luck.

Used to live there about 35 years ago, but memories are gone. I do remember flat though. Lived in a small town called Wishek. I think that is the spellling.
