CB Issue - It receives but won't transmit

My setup is as follows:

Uniden 510 - direct wired to battery
Wilson 3 foot antenna - mounted the antenna on the spare tire carrier. I just drilled a hole in the carrier for the mount.

I installed everything and I can receive but cannot transmit. When tuning the antenna I couldn't get it to budge from a 1.5. When I press the transmit button the transmit lights will light up all the way on the front of the radio.

My first guess is that the mic is bad but is there anything else I need to check other than that?

I doubt it's the microphone. How are you using the SWR meter? That you say "it won't budge from 1.5" is troubling since 1.5 is actually a very acceptable SWR but it wouldn't stay there unless the antenna was nearly perfectly tuned. Did you first calibrate the SWR meter with its Forward/Reverse switch in its "Forward" (or Transmitted power) position and then place its switch in the Reverse or SWR position to measure the SWR?

Next, what kind of mount do you have? If it's like the below, are you absolutely 100% positively for sure certain that the "Insulated Shoulder Washer" (shown below) is installed properly, not missing, or not broken, any of which would short the antenna to ground?

The mount is assembled as it is in the diagram.

I followed the directions that came with the meter. It always read a 1.5 no matter how high or low I raised the tip on the antenna.

When first setting the meter to "Set" should it be all the way over to right or just barely touching the red part right at 3? At first I had it all the way to the right and then tired it setting it right at the start of the red. I didn't get any change from the 1.5



Then again I was doing this around 9:30 at night after fighting with installing the radio in the center console. Having big gorilla hands doesn't help when working in a small space like that. haha

Hey there you stinky French cat.... Just a idea here... do you have a good ground on that Spare tire carrier? You need the largest ground plane as you can get to send out the most signal... if you don't have a good ground plane you will hear the radio, but will not transmit and can give you funky SWR readings. Run a ground wire to the body and make sure it will not get salt spray on it when you go down to clear water beach. Solder all connections and heat shrink them to seal them.... screws into steel will rust so coat them with battery spray to keep them rust free..... K4EBN Troy in St pete.

It should read to the set line on the right then read the swr. What you are looking of as close to 1.0 to 1 across the whole range of the CB 1 - 40 more than likely you will not be able to get there. during the test you could see 1 and 40 be close to the same and 20 to be higher or lower. That is normal.

A 89 yj with a 4.0 aw4 sye out of an 92xj. Now the hard part is done time to get it up in the air just a bit. Working on 8.8 with 3.73 and lsd for the rear. and new D30 hp with 3.73 .
For those who have not figured this out I'm old school but can handle the new too.

When you get it figured out, adjust your SWR with your CB transmitting on channel 20... mid-band. That will give you a good SWR across the entire 40 channel band. Don't botherseparately testing/setting it on channels 1 and 40, just keep it on 20 until you're done tuning the antenna.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I figured that the tire carrier would be grounded already but what do I know.

There is a separate wire at the bottom ot the antenna. Maybe 5 inches long and has a metal loop connector on it. Can that be used to ground the antenna? Is there someplace I can connect than instead of running an extension on it all the way to the frame?

Should I scape some paint away from around the hole I drilled in the carrier in hopes that will help the ground connection?

That ground wire should not normally be connected to anything. Once you get the antenna tuned properly, you'll find that ground wire at the base of the antenna was probably not needed and you can then cut it off. It's only used in unusual installations.

You definitely (!) should have scraped the paint away from around the hole in the bracket so the part of the mount that is supposed to be grounded can ground properly through where the paint was scraped/ground away. It's not necessary to grind the paint away from the side of the mount the insulating nylon washer is on.

Ok...going to scrape the paint on the spare carrier as Jerry indicated. Should I also try to use that ground wire on the base of the antenna?


I'm not going to get anything done soon on it. I have to work a couple of overnight shifts this week..not really looking forward to that.
