CB choosing help!

Yes, I like to ask about products and just see different opinions on things. This time a CB! I hate going to the trails and everyone is talking on the CB but me, then the guys have to put on their PA's so I can hear, which is not so good at times.

SO! here are my choices. Basically just want to talk to them and get a PA for myself as well

I just like this one because its blue-ish and black! so the looks have me drooling over it, but if its a sucky CB I ain't buying it

I'm not a Cobra fan, I'd go for the Uniden Pro520XL in your last pic which is well known as a totally reliable nearly bulletproof CB. Mine is 11-12 years old, covered in dirt and dust, and still works fine. Plus it's compact and can easily be found for $50 or under.

Gone wheeling, back Sunday evening.

very well, I shall get the Uniden Pro520XL

what would you suggest for the size for the antenna? I'm thinking about a firestik being that I've read their pretty good, and I'll get a rigid one being that my jeep doesn't go into any garage.

I'm trying to find a bracket for my ZJ on walcott but can't seem to find one bummer

and I'll get to find out which type of coax I'll be needing

Firestik or Wilson are the two most popular antennas. In either case make sure you get a tunable antenna.

Search here (electrical) or the Grand Cherokee forum for antenna mounts. A lot of people mount them by the rear tail light with a custom bracket.

I've got the Cobra 29 NW WX similar to the top one. I don't have any problems at all with it except that its huge. That really limits mounting locations. It's got a lot of bells and whistles I don't use, but it was given to me so the price was right. If I ever have to buy a replacement, I'm looking for something small.

Either of the others would be fine too.

As far as antennas go, I took off the rigid 2' Firestik and put on a bendable 3' Wilson antenna, quick disconnect, and spring. It's mounted on the JK tire carrier and sits just over a foot above the roof line. Because its flexible I dont have to worry about tree limbs breaking it, especially when backing up. I really like the Firestik but needed flexibility.

RG-58 coax is fine and inexpensive, RG-8x is ok too but is larger/more expensive and not needed for this kind of installation. Don't use RG-59 which looks like RG-58. Any length of coax antenna cable is fine for this type of use, so don't pay attention to some claims that an 18' length is needed which is not true.

I use a Firestick myself and like that it's a little stiffer, though it still flexes. Some antennas are so whippy/flexible that they bang around into the top on rough trails. Make sure to get the FS series of antenna which has a tunable tip which makes tuning it properly for best power output much easier. The FS-2 is a 2' antenna, FS-3 is a 3', antenna, etc. Most find that the FS-3 is perfect for most needs. My FS-2 actually works fine for me since my Jeep is too tall to fit into the garage if it had the FS-3 on it.

Gone wheeling, back Sunday evening.

COBRA 19 hands down. one of the most simple CB's out there and are really cheap. plus it has a PA button. easy to use because it doesnt have all the bells and whistles, and range is only determined by your antenna, so get a good antenna with that CB and your set.

And it is compact and easy to fit in tight spaces.

Just get whatever walcott is selling with their packages. You don't need a high dollar PA.

All you need is a PA speaker once you get a CB that includes a PA function like the Uniden Pro520XL does.

You can buy the Cobra 19 a Wal-Mart for $35. That web site wants $49 and shipping. I put it up on the driverís dash; I can operate it with my left hand right on the wheel. It works for me.

Double check those model numbers, the one that Wal Mart has for that price is the discontinued 19 iii, the one in the ad is the 19 DX IV which has a couple more features.

I'm not getting a package, pretty much getting stuff separate. So any PA would do, alright. I'll look for one, still hoping that mount works for the back of the ZJ
