Backup Camera

Well - I had too much time on my hands this weekend, so I installed a backup camera. We have kids in the driveway frequently, and I thought this might help make sure I don't run over anyone. And, I think its gonna be pretty cool on the trail.

Its a simple camera that mounts to the license plate, and connects wirelessly to a screen in the cab. Simple to install. Bought it at Walmart for $98. Link HERE.

The screen powers up whenever the key is turned on. the camera is fired up whenever the reverse light feed becomes hot. When you shift into reverse, the camera is powered on and sends a signal to the screen inside the cab. There's about a 110 degree pan in the back.

Here are some pics:

First, the camera

The screen inside:

As you can see, the image is very good - you can see a green cup on the ground behind the jeep, my open garage door, and the driveway beyond.

Also, I have auxiliary reverse lights in the back on a separate switch - so anytime I flip the switch to light up the reverse lights, the camera and screen fire up. This might come in handy at night on the trail.

Pioneer AVH-5700

I put the camera in my receiver hitch for now, tucks in there nicely. It is wired to automatically display when I put the Jeep in reverse.

Someone in our local 4x4 group had an idea of mounting one of these cameras on top of the front differential as a "ROCK CAM"

I can even envision a front facing and a rear facing one, on two separate circuits controlled by two separate switches...... ????

Absolutely can be done.. if you get a headunit similar to mine I can walk you through on how to wire it.

Which wire did you tap into to get your head unit to automatically go to the camera when in reverse? I just got the JVC AVX33 and installed a camera as well. The camera works just fine when I switch to the right input but it wont switch on when I go into reverse. I tapped into the purple and black wire that is running along the driver's side of my Jeep. I have been told that that is the correct wire but its not working. Any suggestions?

Sorry for digging up an old thread so hopefully you guys will read this. Thanks in advance for the help.

I spliced the power into my reverse switch on my transmission. That triggers the camera to turn on.. you can also splice into one of your reverse tail lights. Make sure it is connected to the correct cable on the back of your headunit also... you need more than just the video signal cable to be connected to the headunit.. there is an electrical connection that tells the headunit to turn on the reverse camera.

I will try that. The head unit has a separate wire to tap directly into the reverse wire. But when I hooked it up to the purple/black wire it doesnt switch to the camera. The camera works fine otherwise. When I go the correct input on the head unit it shows up fine. Could you possibly send me a pic of where you tapped into? Ill PM you my email address.

Man that's what I want to do. Maybe next year. Where did you get the monitors and cameras? Can you do a write-up, or more pics?
