Anyone know anything about antenna amplifiers?

anyone use an antenna amplifier before? My friend says that you can hear people hundreds of miles away with one. I was thinking of getting one for my Uniden radio with Firestik antenna. I also heard they are illegal in some states.

It's called a "Pre-Amp" and they are not illegal in any state.

Question would be can I find one that will work with a CB, 27 mhz ?

Also, think about this if you can bring in all kinds of signals and can hear all kinds of people then you WILL be bringing in all kinds of extra noise with those signals.

More noise can blank out local or near by signals so you won't hear the trail chatter.

Think about what you want the CB for, is it trail and local talk or is it so you can talk to the world.
Build your system to fit what you want and need not just to say I have it.

Luck,

Anything which puts out more than 4 watts on the CB band is illegal in the US. However, it is very rarely enforced in most places. They are called linear amps, or 'kickers'. If you want to search for them online look for 'export amplifiers' or something similar.

Not to start a pi$$ing contest.
It all is depends on if he wants something to amplify the signal he is transmitting or the signal he is receiving.

A receiving amp is a Pre-Amp and it is legal everywhere.

Luck,

Luck,
I would like to have both. There are not many people where I go off road, and if there are they usually don't have a CB, at least I usually don't see antennas of any sort on their vehicles.

I can't really tell you to use a Linear Amplfier but if used for emergency purposes and not to abuse the air ways then I would believe that no one would complain.

The trick to use an amp for communications is:

Use only the power that is necessary to make the contact.
That means if you can talk to someone with 4 watts, don't use 50 watts and so on.

Do a search on "Export Radios" and see what you come up with.

Luck,

p.s. If you buy an amp, get one with a varible output wattage. Have a click positioning, like low, med, high, not a varible knob that is never in the same output slot. Also, you said you wanted a Receiving Amp too, look for an linear with a pre-amp switch that way you can tun the Pre-Amp on and off as needed.

Make sure the CB and amp are matched.
