another stupid cb question

i debating to mount my antenna either using the existing holes used to mount the stock tire carrier and 3rd brake light with a 3ft antenna or using a lower location and using a 4ft antenna.. if the tips of the 3ft and the 4ft antennas would be about the same level, will the 3ft antenna work just as well as the 4ft or would the extra foot give me a better signal?

In the end you want to get the top antenna about a foot above the Jeep. If you don't then you will get as good of a signal.

What I do is in the city I run a 4' antenna. But when I go on the trail I run a 3' so I do not hit the trees as much. My mount is on the tire carrier. And on the trail I am not very far from the people I am running with.

I run a 2' antenna everywhere I go and it works great. I'm not sure why you're saying it must be at least a foot above the top since RF travels through fiberglass and fabric like it's not even there.

When I run my 3' I can hear in the stereo. But when I run my 4' that sits about a foot above I do not get that. I have found for range the taller the better. But that also can change do to location. And whats around you.

The tire carrier works very well. If you choose to mount it to the bumper you will have to spend a good bit of time working out an acceptable SWR.
