alternator & winch

just used my winch for the first time today. well, testing it out really.
under heavy load my gauge drops into the red, quickly, and my light comes on telling me to check gauges.
i need to know which way to go... more juice from an alternator, bigger battery, more batteries....
this is one of those things i want to fix before it breaks because when it breaks i'll be knee deep in mud.
whats the best way to go with something like this.
thanks.

I'd go with the battery first. If that doesn't cut it, a larger alternator. If that doesn't cut it, a dual battery setup. If THAT doesn't do it, I'd start looking at hydraulic winches.

start with the battery. if your still running a stock battery that would be your weak point at the moment. if you have issues after that, upgrade all your wiring and then think about a higher output alt.

No alternator can keep up with a loaded winch, upgrade your battery. A VERY good battery is the new Sears Diehard Platinum 3478DT (made for Sears by Odyssey) that is designed to hold up to the shock and vibraiton of offroading, plus it is superb for winching duties.

I'm hoping you were sitting in the jeep while winching. A simple option is to give it a little gas to speed up the charging. I too would go with a new battery.

Your battery is just not up to it, it sounds like it's time for a new/better battery. That or your battery connections need cleaning and tightening. The OE alternator is more than up to normal winching tasks, I'm still running the OE alternator.
