Alarm Write-Up

UPDATE: WRITE-UP ON NEXT PAGE!

Alright guys,

Everybody always asks for advice on how to protect their TJ (or other open-top Jeep) when the top's down. Of course, there's the usual: keep doors unlocked, remove everything valuable out of the cab, etc. I wanted a little something more since I'll be living at the beach this summer.

I just received my security alarm that I ordered from Crutchfield.com ... I ordered:The wiring harness cuts a lot of time out of the install ... it provides the system's "brain" with power and also incorporates the vehicle starter disable. It probably cuts a good 1/2 hour out of cutting and splicing, so I thought it was worth it (your harness item # might be different ... mine's for a 1999).

I'll be installing this system soon, with the help of my FSM, and will post a write-up of how it's done IF YOU ALL WANT IT. It depends on who responds ... this'll be a lengthy write-up, and since I'm at school, I don't have a lot of time. So I'll take step-by-step pics if you guys want it.

Let me know,
~J

Well ... I'm bored so I guess I'll just give a preliminary plan here.

Here's everything that came in my box.

And here's what everything does, LOL.

Red = Motion Senor & wire to connect to system brain
Green = Crime Guard 328i4 system brain
Dark Purple = Wires needed to connect brain to power door lock actuators
Light Green = Siren
Brown = Valet momentary switch
Aqua = Status LED
Black = 12V power, ground, ignition input, aux. output #2 (trunk release), and started defeat relay output. If you ordered the TJ wiring harness, it replaces this bundle so it's plug-n-play...no searching for wires in the TJ harness. Obviously, the trunk release output isn't used in TJs (unless you add it yourself).
White = Parking light output, siren output, "+" door input, hood/trunk "-" pin switch, and "-" door input. Since out TJs use negative door ajar switches, we use the negative door input, not the positive one.
Grey = Two transmitters (one with glow-in-the-dark buttons)
Tan = Backup battery & connector
Yellow = Combo "bracket" for LED and Valet switch (not using this).
Light Purple = hood/trunk negative switch. Going to use one for the hood.
Red #2 (far right) = TJ wiring harness with relay for starter disable.

And obviously, the instruction manual and installation notes, stickers for windows, and other notes including warranty info.

Looks like one can save a lot by installing yourself. Do you have a hard top? I have a soft top and am looking for an alarm with similar features. Are you going to use the door lock actuators? If so, do you already have electric door locks?

Yes, you can save a lard wad of cash by installing it yourself. I do have dual tops, so I run my hardtop in the cold months, and soft top in the warm ones.

I'm not really worried about security with the hardtop and full doors. It's when the soft top is on or down and my doors are off. The TJ is SO vulnerable. That's why I got the motion/radar sensor ... it has two stages: a warning area, and an alarm area. If someone gets too close to the TJ the alarm will chirp to warn people, and if they reach into the cab the alarm will go off. These parameters are adjustable so there are less false alarms.

It does have the ability to control power door lock actuators, but I don't have them on my TJ. It may be a fun project in the future to do since actuators only cost $10 or so, but as of right now, nope--not gonna' do it.

I would have recommended getting a two way system so it would page you when the alarm is going off. I have the dual motion sensor but they fluctuate with the temperature so they are fairly inconsistent. I hope you have a decent amount of 12v knowledge if you're going to attempt this yourself.

I installed a crime guard in my '04 TJ a couple of months ago. Turned out to be prety easy and hiding all the wiring was the hardest part. Hit me up if you got any questions or need any advice.

Hey thanks bud, should be pretty easy. I'm gonna loom everything up the best I can. Planning is gonna' win this one ...

I was going to get the two way system, but I didn't have the extra $100 right now. I can always just add it later down the road ... it's a simple connection. And hopefully I can get the sensor dialed in so it's not too off when the temperature fluctuates.

I'm no electrician, but this install seems pretty easy. I've done every install on my TJ myself, so this one shouldn't be any harder than soldering up a stereo harness, wiring an amp, adding reverse lights, making a new relayed headlight harness, dome light defeat switch, or anything like that. I mean I hope, LOL. The FSM is pretty helpful ... all connections are in the TJ main harness in the driver's foot well or in a bundle of wires behind the gauges. Should only take a few hours.

Wish me luck,
~J

Hey guys,
Had some time to make a plan for th install ... using the FSM, this is every connection needed. I've narrowed every single connection back to the left kick panel, using three different connectors. This took all day of studying the FSM to trace and route all the systems back to these connectors.
(For those of you who don't know, C### refers to the connector number, and G### refers to the ground location according to the FSM).

Alarm Install Checklist
- Mount siren (pointing towards the ground)
- Ground siren
- Find location for hood pin switch
- Make sure clearance with hood is good. Connect with female spade connector.
- Guide wires from siren and hood switch through firewall grommet near gas pedal
- Find & mount location for system brain
- Install TJ wiring harness
- Rear of ignition switch – Ignition Switch (gray)
- Mount starter defeat relay
- Ground the system – left kick panel: G300 or G302. Alt.: G200 or G201 (backside under left speaker above data link connector)
- Find location to zip-tie fuse holder to
- Harness ready to connect to brain
- Find spot to drill LED status light (thinking temporary location in defroster grill)
- Find spot for Valet switch (sticky tape-mounted under knee panel)
- Find route for antenna coaxial cable (for remote: as high as possible; away from metal parts)

- Test spots for radar sensor (after brain completely installed) and connect.
Input/Output Harness (4 connections)
- White wire (with fuse) = parking light output (“+”)
- Left kick panel – C203 (green, second down from top); Black/Yellow (dual wires) 18ga, B6 pin -or- Tan (B1) & Gray (B2) 18ga wires for combo lights
- Brown wire = siren output (connect directly to red “+” siren wire)
- Blue wire = hood pin switch
- Green wire = door pin switch (“-”)
- Left kick panel – C323 (red, on very bottom); Yellow wire 20ga, H3 pin
C203 (green) CONNECTOR
For parking lights: Black/Yellow 18ga wires, B6 pin
For combination flashers: Tan (B1 pin) & Gray (B2 pin) 18ga wires

C323 (red) CONNECTOR
For dome light (door ajar switches "-"): Yellow 20ga wire, H3 pin

IGNITION SWITCH (gray) CONNECTOR

LOCATION OF C203 & C323 CONNECTORS
Also, grounding locations G300 & G302

Went to mock-up the install of the harness and wires...

DEFINITELY going to need to extend the TJ wiring harness from the Ignition Switch connector ... it just won't reach to the brain from that location.

Found a great place to mount the brain ... no need to screw it in though ... I think heavy-duty Velcro will do the trick just fine.

My Jeep got broken into again last night in my driveway. They got my Subwoofer amp, fire extinguisher and heated seat cover. They tried to yank the subwoofer but I have it secured with security headed bolts through & through. They unzipped the back window and went out the passenger door when they were done.

I would really like to know how difficult this alarm installation is. I have installed various stereo components and off road lights, but this looks I little more involved. It looks like there might be a lot of time involved.

I installed a crime guard alarm from crutchfield in my TJ a couple of months ago. The wiring was prety simple with a little help from crutchfield's tech department and it took the better part of a saturday. Overall its an easy diy project and the hardest parts were figuring out the wiring initially and hiding everything during the install. I say go for it...its eas enough and the payoff of doing something yourself is always good.

Damn skikrazy, sorry to hear about that break-in. Sorry for the quiet-spell ... I've been in Orlando, FL for my lacrosse team's spring break since Saturday 3/10.

The install will begin tomorrow (in between lax practices) after a quick stop to Radio Shack ... I need to get some more connectors and extra wire ... and some Velcro.

I will post up the write-up ASAP!!

UPDATE:

I have everything in except the siren, hood switch, and motion sensor. Everything is working so far, I need to ground the system a little better.

Hopefully I'll finish up this evening after practice.

I got most of the wiring and routing done in less than 2 hours.
