95 Cherokee Cig Lighter wiring issues

My wife and I traded cars for a 95 Cherokee, and found that the cig lighter didn't work and wouldn't charge accessories. I checked the fuses, and they're all good. The existing lighter assembly looked pretty corroded, so I bought a replacement. When I took the old one out, only one wire (black/white) was connected. After unsuccessfully searching the Internet, I tried the only loose wire behind the panel that would fit anywhere on the back of the lighter (purple/white). Now the Jeep won't start. Help!
