5.9 Grand Cherokee Ltd: Audio Issues

Greetings, all...

I'm the proud new-ish owner of a 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited. With a few minor exceptions, it's been a great Jeep so far, but I'm having some issues with the sound system.

As far as I know, the system is completely stock. However, at least one (possibly more) of the speakers sound almost like they're blown, with that irritating rattle/buzz whenever the bass kicks in if the volume is even at a moderate level. Even weirder, the bass is very overpowering, even when the bass slider on the EQ is slid all the way down, and the midrange and treble are kept flat.

I'm not interested in rupturing my eardrums or waking up my neighbors at night, but it would at least be nice to have a nicely-balanced sound system that I can hear above the road noise. I also have limited funds, so the less money I can spend, the better.

And since I have your attention: Is there a Chrysler 1.5-DIN head unit that can fit into the existing slot and visually match the rest of the dash, but play MP3 discs? I don't even necessarily need to hook it up to an iPod. I know most aftermarket head units can play MP3 discs, but I'd like to keep the dash looking stock, and not turn my Jeep into a thief magnet.

Any help would be appreciated... Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply, but that isn't what I'm really looking for, as I'm trying to avoid putting in an aftermarket head unit.
