5.25 speaker TJ in dash without speaker adapter

WOW, trying to upgrade sound system is expensive.....anyways,, anyone successfully installed 5.25 speaker in the front dash of TJ without using 33 Engineering 5-1/4" Speaker Adapter Plates to save some money?

I spent $5 on adapter plates. Whats to save?

But yeah, especially if you want decent sound in a TJ it can get expensive. If I had to pay retail I'd have about $1500 in mine.

I spent a small amount of money (under $10) on a 12"x12" piece of 16 gauge steel and fabricated my own.

I bought adapters and put good speakers in. There is no difference in sound between the 5.25 new ones and the almost decade old 4x6's. I installed Pioneer 25W nominal speakers. Also, it was not necessary to do any cutting on the driver's side, but it was necessary on the passenger side.

I found them on ebay + $4 for s/h

doing a search now I see some for $20 but lord dont pay that much. It's just a piece of plastic with a big hole. You could probably find the raw materials at Home Depot and cut it yourself.

I bought 2 plastic cutting boards from Wally World for about a buck and a half each and made my own adapters. I put Polks in mine and could tell a world of difference. Definitely worth the effort!

Did mine and can't tell a whit of difference from my old stock 4x6's. I don't have that much money invested, but it's just about the only mod I've done that didn't in some way improve the vehicle.

^ Do you have a factory stereo? I could definitely tell when I went from factory to aftermarket 5.25s

Yes. Factory stereo. I used good quality aftermarket speakers with the proper nominal rating for it. No difference.....

I was very disappointed with my new 5.25 speakers until I stuffed Polyfil behind them. The difference was night and day. Give it a try, >$4.00 from Walmart.

there is not an aftermarket speaker with the proper RMS rating for a stock headunit. 25 watts rms is the lowest i've ever seen from an aftermarket 5.25" and a factory radio is not even putting out 10 watts. you will notice quite a difference with just adding an aftermarket radio.

i got my adapter plates from www.mjmautoinnovations.com for $13 shipped.

As noted, unless you're going to make additional modifications, doing the speakers alone isn't going to do much of anything unless you're stockers were toast.

yeah sometimes it may sound worse. Stock HU's dont have the power to push a lot of aftermarket drivers so a lot of times you dont get enough sound and people think "WTF, I just spent a TON of money on these nice speakers and they sound like crap!"
Just think of it as the first step and continue to upgrade the system one thing at a time.
