2004 Jeep Gr Cherokee - lights

Okay here goes. The last couple of days I've noticed that the driver side blinker indicator lights remained on, constantly. Little wiggle from the steering column turn signal switch and off it went. Checked all turn signals worked fine. Okay. Figured I'd have to switch a bulb soon or it will go away. Today I was coming home and there was smoke in my car. In the cargo area. Smelt electrical. My front position lamps are on and my rear tail/stop lamps and the rear tail lamps (top two on the rear) (both side, driver more brightly than passenger) remain on after the key comes out of the ignition - for hours. Pulled off terminal from battery so I'd have no more worries until figured out. Can anybody help?
