2003 Jeep Wrangler carputer install....
***Edit***
Project SOLD In short, this thread is about how i jammed a home built computer in my jeep... the project has since changed. Go here to see what has been done if you are interested.: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f20/samsung-galaxy-tab-8-9-proclip-tilt-swivel-mount-2006-jeep-wrangler-1300391/ ********* Well, I sold my 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT (with all the computer gear in it!) and I bought a 2003 Jeep Wrangler. I miss my computer gear so much that I decided to add another set up very similar to what i had in my Eclipse. I will be using Centrafuse as my main front end along with I-guidance, Capture, Scribble, and a few other plugins for centrafuse. Other software include BootSkin to change windows boot screen. (pics of that coming later) Items on order:
Items on hand:
The 100GB hard drive will be split in two partitions 15os/85gb storage. I'm still thinking If i should add another drive for capture dump. The jeep it self... ![]() Here's the dash i'm working with... Its a 1.5 din. Which means i cant fit my radio and touch screen together. Im going to have to either go headless, relocate the headunit, or fabricate. ![]() Glove compartment...Not sure what im going to do there yet... ![]() Glovecompartment door removed... ![]() Frotn bezel removed... ![]() Measuring old equipment... ![]() ![]() Radio removed... ![]() ![]() more coming soon... I started the original thread at mp3car forums, but i feel i should share it here as well since its a wrangler ^_^ I hope no one minds.

2003 Jeep wrangler carputer install... (lots of pics)
And here I have my first snag...
![]() ![]() It appears as if that bracket that holds the old radio will be getting in the way of the touch screen. It looks like it can safely be cut without any serious side effects. But first im going to check if it just unbolts somewhere... Its only 6" clearance at the farthest to the bracket and I need 7" 1/2. If all else fails, I'll be breaking out the dremel for that piece. ..... thats all for now. i still have to figure out where i want the actual carputer... ***EdIT: That bracket thats in the way can be unbolted through the top of the dash under the windshield. ![]() ![]() Last edited by 0okamiDigital; 06-28-2009 at 11:13 AM.. |

Today I went out in search for a Cash/Security box. I found one at staples. Its quite a tight fit, but its going to be perfect once all the cuts and vents are done.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Something will need done about the IDE connector. I dont plan on using it unless im forced to.... If i can boot from usb with this board, most likely that IDE connector will be un-soldered or carefully cut off. Or... I might just cut the case some more and put a cover plate over the ide channel fromn the out side... kinda like a service port. All back ports will be accesible from the outside of the case using the standard back plate. Anyway, enough about the case... For now. Next up bench testing received goods. And here we have bench testing in progress....
CPU is an Intel core 2 duo e5200 Wolfdale (((WaauuUUU!!))) /ends howl) clocked at 2.53GHz ![]() ![]() Heat sink mounted. Its quite nice and low profile. Man I HATE intel heatsink/fans though! This one was relatively easy to install but it scares me how it pulls on the board to the point it warps it a little. :suspicious: And those push clips! I dont really like it. I might replace the push clips for nylon bolt/nuts later. ![]() Small ram... Its been a while since i last bought ram chips. They keep making them smaller and smaller. Nice. ![]() Here you can actually see how the board is warped a little. :suspicious: I suspect board failure later... but for now, lets see how it holds up. The assembly is nice a low at about 2.75 inches with standoffs (not shown) That leaves .25 room to to the lid. from the top of the heat sink once its mounted in the case. ![]() Hooking up the M4-ATX... ![]() ugh!!!! what a mess... ![]() Screen powers on ok... ![]() And so does the mobo and what not... ![]() So, in short: PSU works CPU works Board works Ram works Screen works hard drive is spinning... I haven't done anything beyond this point yet, Its late. Tomorrow's another day. (and some more gear arriving. Head unit etc...) eace:more pics and details will be posted later... Just waiting for my FTP issues to be sorted. GRRR (edit - i lost web host account gonna have to use photobucket. )Last edited by 0okamiDigital; 06-28-2009 at 11:33 AM.. Reason: fixing pics |

And here we have some case cutting action...
![]() Almost done... Still needs the fan put in... Motherboard riser mounts were installed to keep the contacts from shorting out in the case (not pictured) ![]() the power supply is a M4-ATX 240 watt Intelligent PSU which will (should) shut down all systems if the battery voltage drops below 10v to prevent a no crank situation. Also has customizable shutdown routines via usb interface. And here's the K301 touch screen installed in the dash. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by 0okamiDigital; 06-28-2009 at 11:35 AM.. |

Looks good so far. I am thinking of doing something similar in my ZJ but worry about how windows will handle the abrupt shut downs with power loss. Are you shutting windows down every time you stop or how are you handling that? I thought about using Linux but would have problems with my GPS software.

and here's where things start to get a little complicated for me... The center console.
My subwoofer is probably dead. When i got the jeep, it would not work. I have music, but no subwoofer. fuses checked. All ok. Meh.,.. what ever. So I decided to pull out the subwoofer and relocate a new headunit in its place since i cant fit it under the screen... Center console removed... ![]() Idea for stereo location... ![]() Old cover of Satelite receiver to be bastardized ![]() And here we are after some cutting... I installed the cover from underneath bolted on. ![]() Some more cutting and bending... ![]() Radio bracket merged with bastardized cover. ![]() fits ok... holds ok... ![]() Some spray panting. ![]() And done... ![]() Last edited by 0okamiDigital; 03-09-2009 at 01:07 AM.. |

Same thing happens for start up. If it detects voltage on the ACC/Ign, then it will start bootup process. It survives cranking too. The carputer never goes through a hard shutdown, unless its hanging during shutdown, and the voltage drops below 10V. In that case the M4-ATX kills power to the computer. |
