Awhile back I decided to build a rear tire carrier for my ZJ that would incorporate the stock rear bumper. I used my hobart 140 handler welder using 0.030 flux core wire. I bought 10' of 1/8" wall 2x3 tubing and 15' of 1/8" wall 2x2 tubing. I have about 3-4 feet of the 2x2 tubing left over, and the A to Z tire carrier fabrication kit
I started by building this section.
added on this section of tube, this is the main base that the swingarm spindle and latch will be mounted to. you can also see the holes i drilled for the nutserts that will be used for mounting
here is the spindle ready to be welded in place. i had to notch/bend the end of the tube otherwise it hit the rear bumper when in place
spindle welded in
this is the tube that goes over the spindle, being heated up to put the bearing races in place.
when welding the swingarm together make sure it does not warp at the welds, mine did and i still need to fix it. with the 2x2 for the vertical support i notched out the sides so it would slide over the 2x3
cut out and welding the first angled support in place. sidenote: pay attention to how high you make the vertical support, I made mine too high so now the back glass does not open with the carrier shut and i need to fix it.
next angled support tacked on
i measured and cut this piece to make the tire mount tube and to cap the vertical support
tire mount plate tacked on
I felt it needed a support between the vertical tube and the tire mount tube so i cut one out after measuring to make sure it would not interfere with the tire when mounted
here it is all finished
rear mirror view, its not so bad when my license plate wasnt mounted inside the spare rim because i could see through the holes
and here is a final pic mounted with no spare
word to the wise, when mounting the wheel studs to the wheel plate- get some washers and a lugnut, get it snug against the hole then use a hammer to force the stud into the hole. be careful to make sure you dont get them all cockeyed. there ya go guys hope this helps
