ZJ Rear Lamp Failture Fix

I as of many of you know of the annoying vic blaring out the Rear Lamp failure, i never could find a writeup that showed me how to fix it so i decided to make one.(please excuse the bad quailty pics and video)

The rear third brake light is made up of three GE 922 bulbs.
the replacements from Advance is- http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Bulb-Sylvania_5080584-P_1026_R|GRPLAMPAMS_659648091___

to get to the back of the light to see which one/ones are bad you have to remove 4 screws and pull back the plastic (i was able to do this without removing the plastic all of the way and only prying it back a bit but took it off all of the way for picture purposes)

(i already removed the bulb on the right)

then you grab the connector and twist to "unlock" it and pull down

then to remove the bulb all you have to do is pull it straight out.

then you put in the new bulbs and reassemble And there you have it, a fully functioning rear light

VIDEO

(i have a lot of trouble getting it to stop filming lol)

NOTE: this is what worked for me and it may not work for you, there can be other problems such as other lights out and bad wiring.

as i have now learned the early (pre 96) zj's only have 2 bulbs while the later (96-98) zj's have 3.

if all the bulbs are working and all fuses are good then you should look for wires that have been rubbing and have broken or are shorting out where the sheath has rubbed off.

Another cause for this, the rear tail lights bulbs have to have a certain amperage, thats how it knows if the bulbs are out or not. The problem is that a lot of cheap and/or aftermarket bulbs don't seem to have the proper amperage and will give that warning even when all the bulbs are working. If you have this problem go the dealer and get the bulbs there, it worked for my dads 96 Grand. I have this warning on mine but its not my tail lights its the 3rd brake light, one bulb is out. theres 3 bulbs there, why does it care so much? two still work.

aside from everything posted in here, another common problem is bad soldering on the back of the VIC itself. Pull the VIC and look at the solder and you will see that it was a problem from the factory the the soldering machine didnt penetrate enough.

Edit: Im reading a lot of peoples problem are the little side marker lights in the taillights close to the rear quarter. Alot of people also replaced the LOM and it fixed their problem

WOW... this is awesome.. I will check mine tonight.. I get the annoying "tail lamp failure" every once in a while and it DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!!!

I'm gonna buy 2 new bulbs and replace them tonight and see if it fixes them...

Maybe put in a bit of dielectric grease too.

well I replaced the 2 upper bulbs yesterday with 2 of the same kind (even though the old ones were fine). Woke this morning and it came right back on..

I have my ZJ with the "auto headlights" on

I was doing some searching and found that another culprit can be a failing starting system, as this "warning" is another way of telling you that u have a stating system problem... This makes me think because I suspected my battery may be weak because the car does crank slow before it fires.

More stuff to figure out.. I think next step will be to replace ALL my bulbs in the back.. If that don't do it then I will replace the battery. I think it needs it anyways and besides I have a system in the ZJ so I know it wouldn't hurt

Best bet is just to remove the Lamp Outage Module. I fought mine for weeks changing bulbs, adding additional ground wires etc. If you look through the threads you will find the procedure for doing this. In removing the LOM the terminals plug back into each other but you have to cut and splice one wire to eliminate it. Everything else still works but that annoying rear lamp failure message is gone.

Sometimes it is the LOM itself that goes bad.
