Since Roger was complaining the other day about the lack of fun writeups ( ), I guess I'll make a writeup on my Mega Blinker Mod.
The purpose of this mod is to turn the lowest red reflector area in the taillight housing into a second blinker.
Materials Needed:
Around 2 feet of wire the same gauge as the blinker light bulb wire
Wire cutters and strippers
Crimps, or solder and a soldering gun
Heat shrink
2 Landscape lighting lightbulbs (brighter than the regular bulbs)
Drill
Drill bit big enough to get the bigger lightbulb through (can't remember the exact size)
A File
Now, I used the red lights that go in the side of the tailight housing that turn on and don't do anything else. If you wish to keep these, you will need to go to the junkyard and grab some.
Step before the steps: Disconect Battery!
Step 1: Cut side marker light wires, leave about an inch of wire. Set these aside.
Step 2: Cut the wires that go to the turn signal lightbulb, leaving about 1 inch of wire for the positive and negative.
Step 3: Drill a hole in the lowest red reflector housing, and use a file to make the shape just like the socket where the light fixture originally came from.
This is where the light originaly came from:
You have to cut that, here:
Hope all that makes sense.
Ok, then you run the main blinker wires to the original blinker bulb AND the new one you are putting in.
So it looks something like this:
Then you put the new blinker light fixture into its new hole, using the landscape lighting bulb, and you hook that battery back up and hope you did everything right.
Ok, well I'm sure that this was clear as mud, so feel free to ask any questions :P
Here's a vid of the finished project: In reality, both the red and yellow flash the same brightness, but the camera didn't pick it up that way. Oh well.

i think its a decent idea, nice bit of ingenuity. im not so sure i like the way it looks though, i think it would look better if they were both orange, or both red. i guess im just used to the way they look normally

Hmm, its an idea. maybe ill make the top red reflector into another blinker, and take out the orange. so they'd both be red.

you mean like, tapping it into the brake lights instead of the blinker?

Yea. leave them in the spot there at but splice into the brakes. that way theyd light up with the breaks.
or do they already? im not sure. but its a good idea for anyone who tints there lights and wants a bit more output.
thanks for the great wright up!

No they do not light up when you press the brake like the brake lights do.
See the problem I had with doing that, was that the brake light is a three wire, and this side light I used is a two wire.
So for the brake lights, one of the wires is the ground, one must be the running brake lights, and the other one must be the for when you step on the brakes to where it lights up.
So, using that assumption, if you were to hook the side marker light up to the ground and the wire that makes the brake light light up when you press the brakes, you could do it. However it would only light up when you pressed the brakes, no running lights.

FWIW wire nuts have no place on a car. You should really invest in a soldering iron. It's one of those deals where even though you're trying to make a step forward.......those crimps and wire nuts harm the reliability of the original tail light circuits over time. Right now, you improved safety. 2 Years from now, probably reduced it.
good luck with the truck.

yes yes, thank you i know I happen to have two soldering irons and plenty of solder. Just didn't have any shrink wrap at the time. I'll redo it eventually.

I'm sorry, I was going to post a really smart remark mocking someone, but realized it wasn't worth it. I'm sure some don't even care to protect the conjoined wires at all, much less use wire nuts.
Goodness, people (person), chill out. This is a decent mod.
