XJ or ZJ- to build or not to build???

first ill give background on 2 of my jeeps of which im going to mildly build 1 of them. 1st jeep: 99 xj classic, 4.0, aw4, 242, d30 front, 8.25 rear, paid $3000 then added 2" lift, new ball joints, new dueller ats (29"), cai. no rust w/ decent amethyst paint. runs well, some electrical gremlins (was salvage due to wreck) average 16/21 mpg, 130k. someone offered to buy it for $4000. 2nd jeep: 94 grand cherokee 5.2, almost dead 46rh, 249, d30 front, d35c rear, 2" lift, 50% bfg at (30"). no rust or dents w/ decent white paint. everything works except tranny, paid $300. i like the xj (very reliable) but i really enjoy the power of the 318 zj, even with bad tranny. so, do i sell the xj for $4k and rebuild the zj 46rh and pocket the rest. btw- i have a 78 j10 with all the offroad "necessities". either the xj or the zj is going to be dd for work and highway- slight offroading.

just wonding what someone in my shoes would do. i realize the d35 and np249 in the zj are pos, but for highway with only 30s? is it worth it to rebuild the tranny- or should i put headers, exhaust, bored tb on the xj for more power???

if you have the V8 it has a d44a in the rear, the 249 has the dreaded VC but it under rated..................... the power of the 318 is tempting but if its just a DD, and you dont need all extra room and arnt towing anything i would say stick with the xj,

BUT what you could do is change out the transfercases..shhh i wont tell anybody and sell the xj, rebuild the tranny, and put $2,200 in the bank or use that to put heads, exhaust, and bored TB on the zj and really give it some power

interesting approach on the tcase swap.... ill consider it. im positive on the zj having the weaker d35c. it even says on the build sheet d35c. if i put headers , exhaust, bored tb, and cai on the 318, approx. how mush more power would i get??? its 220hp, 280ftlbstq. originally. what kind of gas mileage would the zj then get??? i had a 98 5.9 limited (NICE) but SUCKED GAS especially with the way i drive...

^ERROR: on the second gen ZJ (96-98) before that it was the standard d35 just like on the 4.0.

but i would sell the XJ just because youd come out ahead monetarily. if you like it alot more than the ZJ go that route but you couldget a good check for the XJ even after the tranny if you need the money

Tough choice. I've owned both and loved both. I would go over the ZJ with a fine toothed comb and check for rust and any other weak spots. If it checks out ok I would keep that and sell the XJ. The 318 power is really nice to have.

I would sell them both, buy a ZJ w/ 4.0, swap in a 231 and get the best of both worlds... 2wd for mpg, coils all the way around, plust interior, only downer is the axle? swap in a 8.8
