Not sure where to start on my review, probably from the beginning would be the best place. Since I didn't install the kit myself I had to rely on questions to my installer. Going to take his word as gold since this shop specializes in building hard core rock crawlers and win rock comps in their super mod class everywhere they go. The simple WJ build should have been a walk in the park for them.
We considered at first just having them custom fab all needed parts, but just material costs alone, not even including fab labor, significantly exceeded the IRO kit cost. Couldn't find anyone on the net bad mouthing the IRO kit so it seemed like an obvious choice. Pro fab guy/installer said he'd use what he could from the kit, fab what he seen could be better. End result, he used everything as is from the kit!
So I pulled it out of the fab shop and got to hit my first big curb right away. Normally I would have slowed down, this time I said lets check it out, you probably guessed, it was like the curb wasn't even there.
Hit the surface streets and instantly noticed IRO clearly understates their claim that this kit will ride as good as stock. I felt the real test would be once I got on the highway though, skeptical still, I hit the freeway on ramp. Radar detector on, brought it up to we'll just say 85 for legality reasons.
"As good as stock"? Oh hell no, the stock ride of my WJ was just amplified to an entire new level of better. The improvement in rode comfort on the street is night and day from stock. My only complaint had nothing what so ever to do with the IRO lift, but the tires. The Goodyear Dura Trac tires I went with because I thought they would offer good off road performance with a nice road ride turned out to be not so. These things sing on the road, I've heard worse, but my previous off road tires were 35" Mickey Thompson Baja Claws and I was always amazed at how such an aggressive tire could still be so quiet on the road. For road noise I give the Dura Tracs a 7, the Mickey Thompsons a 5 (lower being quieter).
So we got to the test site and right away I could see what we were getting into. A loose sand wash with some extreme flex test points on each bank (see pictures above). It was at that time I realized, this was the first time ever this WJ had even been put into the 4lo option. I wasn't so sure I was even going to make it. Time for another tire rating, ultra loose wash sand, Dura Trac gets a 9, right up there with the 9.2 I'd give the baja claws, only thing that would have rated higher would have been a sand paddle tire in straight sand, on these conditions though I'd only of given one of those a 7. Can't wait to see how the new Dura tracs do in the snow, the condition Goodyear rates them the absolute highest for.
Back to the IRO lift though, it worked great, I never once slid or broke traction. The capabilities of the WJ were amazing, with no lockers installed the Quadra Drive system performed beautifully. Note to all, 31.6" tires, with 4" lift will rub when the wheels are fully sunk without some minor plastic trimming which now has to be on my to do list. If you've heard it you know the sound, click click click, tires hitting plastic, got out and sure enough the tires were rubbing pretty hard when the thing was fully flexed. A little wear or some trimming will be required, I'm going to opt for the trimming because in the spring I'm going with some 33" Mickey Thompsons on beadlock rims (there goes the stock look, but oh well).
So with tires sunk in the rear and rubbing decided to back up a little to flat ground and release the JKS Quicker Disconnects. Haven't seen it in the day time yet, but somehow the pins that hold the disco in got bent to the point where they couldn't be pulled out. Will have to address that issue in the daytime when I can try to see what happened.
That's it for now though, I'll post an update when I move onto the next step of the plan, the IRO rear long arm upgrade kit.
Over all I'm 100% happy with the selections made. I think a picture is worth 1000 words, so here's a picture of the text messages I gave the new build priority over, should give you something to gauge my opinion from...
(For soon to be "review" legal reasons the FTC is attempting, I would be required by law to point out I purchased these products on line at full retail price just as anyone else would. I was in no way paid by, or even discounted by any of the trade name companies I mention to give this review or use their products.)
