Started my new wider sliders and the base for some tube to protect my fenders and maybe eventually lead to an exo.

Just got started on them using 1.5" x 0.120" DOM

Here are the wider tubes, they are as wide as the doors and will give better side protection for low stuff and driving along side stuff. The old sliders were so narrow they would not do anything to keep stuff off the wide doors.

I will be adding 3 1x2 supports between each tude and the square tube at the pinch seam.

Then I am going to wrap the same tube arounf from the slider to the bumpers, here are the bumper mounts. Tubes will be bent next.

The old tube cut off

Nice work! I was wanting to do this myself a while ago.. I didnt even think about the bolt on part, thats a great idea. Are you using jam nuts for where it connects to the sliders? Its hard telling from the pics.

I am using tube connectors that people use for cages. This will probably become a cage at some point.

i think you should have coonected the tube fenders to the sliders, like nothced the tube fender and welded it to the sliders.

Why. The plate will be much stronger for a foundation. And going to the tubes would have required more intricate bends.

ya, i guess i could see that.

what bender and welder are you using? was it very hard to keep the tube close to the body and still be able to open your doors?

It is a friends bender. Just a manual one. He has a bunch of dies for it. I am doing the tacking with my lincoln flux core 120 volt. We are doing the finish welding with his miller 175 mig.

I agree, like this:

How the plate is stronger than connecting them in directly?

Are you going to trim the fenders to better match up with the arcs/lines of the tube fenders?

The plate has much more weld area to the main slider and the load direction is better for the plate. If you welded into the slider tube then you end up transferring all the load through the Dom tubing to slider weld where with the plate you are distributing the load over a much larger area. Also the slider tube is designed to resist a side load where the fender tube will be taking possible vertical loads and would be putting a load on the slider tube in a direction it was never designed to take. The guy helping me is an engineer and has built a full exo on his xj that is very well designed. So I am trusting his suggestions.

As far as trimming I still need to trim a bit for my 35's and I am then going to paint that contour line black to match the cladding and bumpers which should help the tube blend in nicely.
