today, we decided that we will have toput my axles on first before we pull the engine and tranny.

sigh.... the rear will be first, as all i have to do is slap on shocks and coils.

then we did some looking at the front to see how we can do crossover steering with my 1 ton stuff and the WJ nuckles.

have you read the "42RE limp home" thread? After all of that, I will most definitely worry about it. It has always had synthetic fluid in everything.

Can you force it into 2nd with the shifter? How's your fluid level? When's the last time you did fluid and filter change?

No Ive tried manualy shifting through the gears and theres no effect at all so I checked the fluid and its right where it should be and isnt burnt but it does have air bubbles in it .. as for the filter ive never changed it and was contemplating doing it but im not sure if it will do anything. My buddy said a modulator valve but im not sure because when i lost my gears I was going to take off and my rpms shot through the roof then there was a loud smack like I just got rear ended almost like using a trans brake on a race car

The smack is very worrisome - drop the pan and see what you find.
