well this was last night. But I think I broke something in the rear diff. Was backing out of the drive way felt a small bind in the rear axle then a crack or was it more of a pop? Either way there was a noise. Kelley and I look at each other. I put it in drive to pull back into the drive way, no abnormal sounds. Put it back in reverse, no binding or odd sounds. So we continue on our way to dinner. One thing I notice when driving is that the noise and vibration are now almost gone. There is still some vibration but it is greatly reduced from what it had been.
So my next day off I am going to tear into the diff and see if the carrier is what my problem is.

It was a popping noise. it was kinda scary to hear it, i seriously thought something really bad had happened. Hopefully it didnt break anything too bad. Or we can hope that it fixed whatever the problem was.

Do you have a locker in the rear differential?

Okay,

if you've never heard that pop before, it is the locker "unlocking".

No, I have heard that before. This was like something breaking. The operation of this locker has never been smooth by any means. But what happened last night was not normal. And after it happened the Jeep is driving more like it should. What I am beginning to think is that there is something wrong with the detroit carrier and that is causing my vibrations and growling noise from the rear end.
