weird noise backing up and braking..not brakes!

2002 grand Cherokee Laredo..4.0 engine. Weird noise when apply brakes and back up. Noise is coming from below shifter area, more towards passenger side. Above the transmission. Replace front u joints and still there..needed anyway. Also just had crankshaft sensor replaced. What is this noise. My mechanic is stumped!

I used to get a whirring sound in my ZJ when I put it in reverse. I figured it was either in the diff or the tranny, but it was just a noise, and there were never adverse symptoms associated with it. It usually happened when the Jeep was just started and still cold, too.
