UTZJ 5.9 DD stock build.......for now
Picked up the 98 5.9 on Saturday. Its going to be replacing my WJ (some of you may have followed my other build) as a DD. The WJ will now be a trail rig only.
I have wanted a 9er for a Loooooooonng time. Finally decided to pull the trigger. She has 175k on her. Very clean on the inside. Has a few cosmetic issues on the outside but most a easily fixed. (paid $2850 for her.....i think thats pretty good considering)
Main issues at the moment:
AC is dead. Compressor kicks on for only a few seconds at a time. Air blows strong from the vents but its warm. Im thinking it may just be out of freon. Ill try that first then chase it from there
249 is shot (no surprise). Wheel hop is pretty bad at slow tight turns. Not a big deal since I was planning a 242 swap anyway.
Muffler has a small hole. Again, no big deal. Muffler delete will be occuring this weekend anyway!
Rear hatch is tricky to open. You have to pull up on the latch as you use your thumb to push where the key would go. Looks like the cable may have some slack and not completely releasing the latch. Should be an easy fix
Going to make this a basic "re-build" for the time being. Once the wife is done with her masters (about 2 years) I really want to start looking into a 408 build. For now ill be ordering some basic parts (new front rotors, pads alla round, new belt and plugs, new steering linkage, new headlight assemblies, diff fluids, etc.....)

Changed the oil last night and new air filter. Tranny fluid looks perfect. Here are a few pics from this morning:

rear hatch needs fixed......might have to ultimately replace it but for now ill just sand it down and color match these two rust spots
rear bumper cover has a small crack.
hood vents need re-painted
I have a new OPTIMA RED TOP coming ym way this week for FREE!! so i think the terminals will be replaced as well. They have obviously seen better days
All in all id say its in pretty good shape for 176k. The guy I bought it from was the second owner and had owned it since 2000. EVERYTHING power wise works. I think I may have blown a fuse for the fog lights because they worked yesterday. But when I came back out from the store, they turned on the right back off and wont come back on. I inherited the stupid "low coolant sensor" warning. Going to have to fix that ASAP. Headliner is perfect except for the rear sound bar. It is SLIGHTLY falling. I need to get it re-covered. All of the speakers work and sound great.
Also, getting a used Superchips from the guy that is giving me the Optima. He used to own a 9er with an ATLAS II :)
Couple 9er Newb questions. what is the normal running oil pressure and engine temp. Oil seems to hold around 32 around town and 42 on the interstate. Engine temp sits around 208 when im moving. When sitting in traffic, it creeps to around 215-216 before the fan kicks on and brings it back down to abour 210.......normal?
new OE headlights ordered. Nothing fancy, just getting rid of the mis-matched levels of haze on the current ones for some nice new clear ones. $50 bucks....not bad
bought a new toy.....got tired of borrowing my father-in-law's. Muffler be GONE as soon as I get home. Anyone interested in a 5.9 exhaust tip?
Bilstein 4600's ordered from KOLAK. Hope they get here soon. My current shocks are DEAD. there is almost ZERO compression left in them. The ride is just a little bumpy :rolleyes:
Drive shaft gone. No more wheel hop for the time being. Leaky muffler deleted. Sounds sooooooo much better

alright so yesterday REALLY sucked with no AC. I knew the AC wasnt blowing cold when I bought it. When you turn the AC on, air blows strong from the vents but its VERY warm....almost hot if you put your hand right by the vent. Compressor will kick on and run for about 3 seconds then cut off. It repeats this over and over (on for 3 seconds then off for a few then back on). I tried filling it with an entire can of 134a hoping that the freon had just leaked out over time and the compressor was kicking off do to a lack of pressure. It took the whole 22oz bottle with absolutely ZERO change in temp from the vents. Im thinking it was either completely empty on freon and needs more, or has a huge leak. I dont really want to just go buy more 134a and dump it in and end up wasting money or over filling it. Im no AC expert at all but would like to avoid a shop if at all possible. when the compressor would kick on, the low side would hold steady at 100. Any thoughts?
picked up some FREE stuff from a buddy.
He had a set of manifold gauges. Looks like the system is holding pressure good and the freon was full. Looks to be the fan. It will only kick on for a few seconds then turns off for a minute or so before kicking back on for just a few seconds. AC seems to blow slightly more cold when going down the interstate and air can move across the condensor. Looks like ill swapping ina new fan soon.
looks like from my brief research, that the low speed fan not wanting to kick on may also be the reason the engine is running around 208............
ordered a new fan motor and the new connector:
should be here Saturday thanks to Amazon Prime. Hopefully going to get this AC issue worked out soon
Jeep looks nice, I used to rock the 5.9 in my first Ram ('01), I liked that motor. FWIW I'm not 100% but Id guess the oil gauge is just a dummy gauge like most of the era and newer. If its reading normal it should be good.
