Think Twice Garage's Project Unicorn

The latest from the hacks at the TTG:

This is my 1994 ZJ Laredo. The project name comes from Pat/CTeunuch, who pointed out that this Jeep is my "unicorn" as I've been talking about getting one of these since we started destroying ZJ's together. After Pat bought his 1994 last summer, I knew I had to track down a 5 speed for myself. This one popped up on Craigslist about 5 miles from where I live, so I checked it out and bought it sort of on impulse. Running the VIN through Chrylser confirmed that it is a factory 5 speed, making it one of an assumed 400 produced.

Couple of the highlights from the factory:
-4.0 HO with AX15
-231 TC
-D30/D35 rear with 3.55's
-Factory power leather/locks/etc- well optioned Laredo
-Factory block heater

Previous owner added:
-ZJ Canyon's with 235/75R15 BFG All Terrains
-Stage 2 clutch (going to be ditching this in the near future, pedal feel is nothing like Pat's 5 speed)

So far I've added:
-5.9 roof rack
-Ebay E-code knockoffs
-Alpine HU and speakers
-Accel 8mm wires

Current plans are to make it a DD/mild wheeler. I want this to be nothing like my old ZJ on 35's in a lot of regards since I commute 85 miles a day. Instead, I'm going for a ZJ that will be capable of easier trails and getting me to work every day. Budget is a concern, and I'd like to hopefully get away with getting everything done for under $2k, not including the price of the ZJ.

Highlights of the new build:
-Freshly rebuilt 8.8 rear with 3.55's from Pat's first version of his 5 speed build and Ruffstuff cover from my old build.
-OME 2.5" medium duty coils/shocks with 3/4" spacer up front
-RE super duty or Rusty's front trackbar and JKS adjustable rear trackbar
-JKS discos
-Rusty's TC skid
-KOR support
-Sliders- either home built or something like IRO's or JCR stage 3's
-Factory hitch and tank skid for the rear
-D30 ruffstuff cover
-Ruffstuff's new HID's???
-Either 31x10.5R15's (KM2 or MTR-K, hopefully) on Ravines with Spidertrax spacers or 265 75R16's on TJ Moabs with Spidertrax spacers

Currently, I've got the lift, 8.8, and tank skid ready to go, and have a line on the JKS discos. Stay tuned for progress

And since all threads are worthless without pictures:

Old build:

Day I bought the Unicorn:

Money shot:

Next to Pat's 94 5 speed- 2 of 400 made, I don't think there's too many pictures like this.

Knockoff E-codes:

New wires and Mustang 5.0 oil filter:

Installed a 180 degree thermostat tonight- seems to be running right around 200* now- hopefully this won't be too cold for the winter.

It's got a couple of rough spots on the body, but nothing I've found makes me too nervous at this point. I'd actually say that this is cleaner than my Laredo was that I bought with 102k on it in 2007 (the green ZJ above) even though it's 5 years later and this has 60k+ more miles on it.

At this point, I've worked on/owned enough ZJ's to run away from anything real rusty. I know better than to get into that nightmare.

Yeah I know how that goes, I am picking up a 91 briarwood XJ that has rusted out rockers and I am not sure if I even want to know what the floors look like even though I will be pulling it all out for the cage. But that ZJ looks cleeeean

Thanks man. I'm going to grab some decent pictures with my D60 when I get a chance- got a couple cool spots in Boston that I'd like to shoot at.

8.8 and OME setup is pulled out of the parts Jeep. Another step closer to having it lifted.

Nothing lately- have the lift setup basically ready to go along with the 8.8. Putting off buying tires until I have to at this point, which will be soon.

Also decided to go with a T&T trackbar and bracket instead of the RE up front- it wouldn't have worked with my lift height.

For the same reasons that you have a giant forehead and an extra chromosome?

That second part I can't answer.
