Thanks for the compliments guys.
As far as ZJ vs XJ, I'm not 100% because it's a fairly uneven comparison of my two. I started wheeling a ZJ too, 4.5" on 33's open/open. Comparing my XJ when I started, 3"/33's open open to the first ZJ, I have to say ZJ I think. The suspension flexes much better with fewer mods, and obviously doesn't have any annoying spring wrap. It's also a LOT nicer inside.
Stick vs auto, hands down stick is better. It's much more of a challenge than auto, but that's what the sports all about right? It wasn't as difficult as I expected, though I did stall 7 times, but it did give me a lot more control over the rig. I think once I get better at picking the right gear in 4 low for the obstacle I'll like it even more. So my advice is find an OBD1 ZJ 4.0 and swap an AX-15 in, or if you get lucky like I did find a real one in decent shape.
Now for some bad news. I forgot to run a breather line, and the rear axle filled with crap. On the way to/from work today it was howling like a banshee when I was on the throttle, and quiet when I got off it. I changed the fluid tonight, and it's still loud at speeds and it growls when I go ~15mph. Seems like I'm going to be rebuilding the 8.8 sooner than I thought. Do you guys think I should
A. Pick up a V8 ZJ from a friend for $200, steal the axles, then junk it. Possibly Aussie the 44A
B. Rebuild the 8.8 with a free LS
C. Rebuild the 8.8 with a Detroit, like I planned when I go to 4.56's
