So where do you work? You're making some good money for the Jeep, think about it that way.

Yes, it snows in Texas.

Okay, I have been noticing blue smoke on start ups... Could it be Valve stems? I would really appreciate it if some could please tell me what I should do? When it's warm not much smoke if any is coming out. Should I run a compression test? Run thicker oil? What should I do. The jeep claims to have 103k on it.

Does it do when your idling? or is it just when you crank up?

I can only say like are you sure its blue and are you sure its not doing it as you go down the road. Ive had bad valve stem seals in my first 240sx and it did it at idle and only when i started moving from a stop. I had bad rings on another 240sx and it smoked constantly and that engine had some serious problems. valve stem seals isnt that bad if thats what it is

You have to change them. I got a brand new set for my 240 engine for 20 bucks but mine was a special deal. If your know what your doing you can replace the valve stem seals without taking the head off. but if you havent dont alot of work like that id recommend having someone else look at it and help you with it.

How do I check if the seals are bad? BTW I can get the seals for $30 at work.

do cylinder leak down tests, if the cylinders hold pressure then the rings are good so any smoke would be from seals. Also seals usually only show leakage smoke when they sit and drip. Rings would smoke when running and be all the time not just at start up, hard for oil to leak past rings when parked unless you park it upside down.

I would say compression test. And ive never done the oil test but you can put a drop of oil in the spark plug hole and if the compression goes up there is a valve problem. if it stays the same its a ring problem. I also heard some other rumors about what it means when it does it only when the engine starts up. something like valve guide clearance. I would get it checked out by someone man.

I try not to pay mechanics to do my work. I'll just research until I figure it out. I have a buddy of mine that says he can help me. But I just wanted to make sure the 4.7l wasnt anything different. So basically doing a "leak down test" will only see if the piston rings are bad?

it will tell you if the valves are bad if the compression goes up. otherwise its rings. and I completely agree about not paying others. Just get a couple opinions from some friends
