it depends on how heavy your wheel+tire combo is, or if you plan to add anything else to it. Personally, I've been thinking about the same idea, but doing 1/4" so I could add some sort of cargo storage to it as well, without worrying about bouncing it in half.

I wonder if anyone here has purchased that. For that price, it almost isn't worth my time to build one...I would use it as a temporary thing when I didn't want my spare in the back, but would toss it in the back when I am towing.

I had been thinking of makingone that mounts to the hitch, and folds down for gate access.

Yea, this is just something to get the spare off the roof. It would be VERY simple to make. In steal its only $5. Haha. I just need to get some flat steel and make it actually mount. Very easy. I just need to know if 3/16 is strong enough.

I would think so. There's a guy in my local club that runs that exact one with a 15" cragar soft 8 and a 31" MT on it. He's had zero issues with it.

oh it definitely will. I used to have a rodeo with a spare on the rear tire carrier, and then put a (free) second spare on the roof. that lasted about 3 days as my mileage went from around 22 down to 15. Took it off and it went right back up to around 22.

Do you have a welder? If so what kind? I think I'm going to get me one here soon but I really no nothing about them. I don't have 220 readily available so I'm looking to get a mig/gas 110V.

So what's your plan for this carrier? Just like the ebay one, or are you going to make it drop down or whatever?

Just Like the one on ebay for now. I can always add a hinge later. I just need something now. I'll prolly end up getting a rear bumper at some point.
