I am all for the "whatever works" and something along the lines of "if it works, why change" for some things. I have always had good luck with the Mobile 1 so I have stuck with it. Now if there was a problem I'd look for other oils.

You don't want to clean out the motor completely because if you do it will leak! From what I have heard at times is that the synthetic will clean out your gunk, that was keeping the oil pan gasket together, and then the synthetic cleans it out and it leaks. Going from dino to synthetic can cause that apparently.

Chart would be cool. I like graphs! ha

Cold Start, Driving Home, and Poor and abused WJ

Yea i read that too. Thats the main reason I don't switch to full synthetic.

I've always ran it and have had all my stuff replaced in the engine recently. Specifically, the crank case seal, rear main seal, and oil pan gasket. Could try it and see what happens. The worst is that it exposes a problem... Or just run Dino Oil and not worry about it! ha

Dealer wanted 1200 or 1300 for it all. My mechanic friend did it all for 600 ish?

Yeah it is great to have friends who are Certified Mechanics and work a Jeep Dealership!

Don't Quote me 100% on the dealer numbers. But I do remember they were more then what he charged me. It was a lot of labor IIRC.

Labor is what kills you haha. You have to pull the engine. Thats the hardest part. Once its out the rest is easy.

Yup they make their money on labor! Pulling the engine is not something I would do myself (yet)! Oh my god, I can see my mom's face now when she pulls up the driveway from work and sees my engine on a lift... Oh my she would freak out. (mom doesn't know much about cars, so when I work on the Jeep she is always like "are you sure you know what you are doing??!?")

What do you rebuild? Kinda noob-ish question but why not ask and learn?!

you don't have to pull out the engine to change the rear main seal on the 4.0s ....just gotta drop the oil pan ..pull out the seal a put the new one in ..I'm sure I'm missing some steps but there is a video on YouTube about it

I think when he was referring to pulling the engine, it was for him to pull it for a rebuild.

I think he had to pull the mechanical fan on top of all of that too.

Its not really rebuilding, more of replacing the wear and tear parts. I would just replace the piston rings, bearings, valve seals, and pick up a complete engine gasket kit. Maybe the lifters if they were tapping. Then have a machine shop do a valve job, weigh the pistons, and check clearances. Probably resurface the head and cylinders if they're bad. After all of that its practically a new engine. Removing the engine is easy as long as you label everything. It just takes time and patience if you have the right tools. Then you put everything back together and hope that it starts up again haha. I rather remove the engine then mess around with the differential. I hate messing with those clearances with the ring and pinion.

Hmm this may be a little quicker then the last. This was whomped on WOT from the start.


Can I get some people to get out a stopwatch and see if they can post some 0-60 times... lol. Thanks! (I feel like if I am the only one to do it, I try to "help" my 4.slow along)

For this video I had a 1/2 tank of gas, only one other person in the Jeep, and still a lot of crap in the trunk. Probably 300 pounds lighter and the 1/2 tank of gas lighter.

Okay I got ya there. Hah my 4.0 loves to tap on cold starts, but everyone says that is okay for the 4.0. Ziplock bags and a sharpie are a must for an engine rebuild! Maybe if down the road I will have my 4.0 rebuilt (with the intent of making it a 4.6 engine) and then rebuild and then beef up the 42re turd behind it.

Yeah the ring and pinions can be a bit** if you don't do that right!
