Silverback Gorilla build thread - Manual 5.9 limited

Hi all

Its been almost a year now since I picked up my silver 98 5.9 limited. Its taken me a long time to be able to do any work on it because of my lack of workspace (living in the city) and lack of another dd. I didn't do a whole lot with my previous jeep but the muddy gorilla does have a short build thread.

Well now I have both of those things and I am ready and rearin to work! So first Ill start with my grand plans, more or less in order.

- hp30 swap from a 96+ cherokee
- ford 8.8 swap into rear, both 4.56 gears.
- 5spd transmission swap, I'm pretty well decided on a terminator ax15
- Will need to add some flat shorty headers to this list
- Planning on fitting 35x12.5 shoes over some 17 inch black wheels
- Fender flares to stay street legal in MN and add some pizzaz
- IRO hack and tap SYE and custom length rear drive shaft

Last on my list would be lockers, steel bumpers, and engine upgrades.

I've already started the work, starting with new 4.5" springs and bilstien shocks. The previous owner told me that he used to have 6" or 7" of lift but decided to cut the springs down to shorten it for some reason... which made it sit uneven.
Anywho, the good news is though it already has long arms on it, so thats a great place to start. So, short list of things it already has or I have to install:

- IRO Front Long arm kit, rear adjustable arms
- IRO 4.5" coils
- Bilstein 5125 series shocks
- JKS Quick disconnects
- 249 -> 242 swap
- Kolak 3" exhaust w/flowmaster 70

Currently my jeep is sitting with the front suspension dismantled.

[EDIT] So I decided to put all the links for information here in my original post.

WJ brake upgrade. This is good because the other links I found did a bunch of steering modification too, which I want to avoid for now.

So I've been trying to gather as much information for the manual swap as I can as this is going to be the most work. Here are some of my sources of information for this swap. Again I want to give a big shout out to Ratmonkey for his treasure trove of information. Rest in peace man.

This is the defacto place to get zj manual swap information:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/z...-swap-1316011/

Due to the issues I've read with the nv3500 only being medium duty, and still blowing up behind a 5.2 let alone a 5.9 I decided to look for another option. During my research I saw mentioned a almost mythical "terminator" ax-15 transmission, built strong enough to stand up to much higher engine torque, and is supposed to be a direct replacement for jeep nv3550 transmissions.
http://rsgear.com/products/transmiss...%E2%84%A2.aspx

As an added bonus, the 93/94 manual ZJ originally came with an ax15 transmission so I figure all the easier to swap. So the only question I had left was whether the PCM computer from a RAM 2500 with a 5.9 and manual transmission would be compatible with the terminator ax15 transmission I want to use. This hasn't been easy to figure out, and anybody with more information on this I would appreciate you posting it here. I called a local jeep/dodge dealer and talked to the parts department, and I've spent some time searching various jeep and dodge forums. Some of the helpful links I came across have been:
- http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/p...um-yj-1011186/
- http://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen-...onversion.html

So all together this is the information I've come up with. The ax15 does not have any kind of port or wiring that hooks into the ODBII computer. That struck my as odd because I know for a fact the ax15 continued to be used in XJ jeeps through 99, and all cars in america switched to ODBII midway through 96. Between that information and the wiring descriptions in the dodgeforum thread for a nv3500, this leads me to believe that the ODB computer does not send or receive signals to/from a manual transmission. There for I am fairly confident that I can successfully do this swap with a terminator ax15 and a magnum transmission bell housing.

Haven't bought any parts yet. But I have a bead on a manual zj I can source needed parts from. As this project will be costing some $$ it will probably take me much of the summer to complete.

Just found a wealth of information for bell housing fitments...
http://www.jeeps-offroad.com/showthread.php?t=4740

Quote:
The Jeep/Dodge AX15 5-speed, the Jeep NV3550 5-speed, the Jeep NV1500, the Toyota R150F, R151F & R155F, the 87-92 Toyota Supra Turbo R154, the Isuzu AR5 and the Pontiac Solstice\Saturn Sky\Chevy Colorado\ GMC Canyon MA5 5-speeds all share the same case to bellhousing bolt pattern (Large Pattern). As such there are a number of possibilities that can be had when a 5-speed is desired:
Quote:
#5. 94-99 Dakota 3.9L V6 Bellhousing: Connects all to any 3.9L V6 and any 273/318/340/360 V8, Magnum 5.2\5.9 V8, 3.7L V6, 4.7L V8, 5.7L Hemi V8, and Jeep 2.8L CRD Turbo Diesel. (Requires use of an 11" flywheel.)
I knew I had read it elsewhere about which bell housing to get for correct fitment, but I'm glad I found this because I wanted to be really certain that I could attach a 5.9 to a ax15 transmission.

Yesterday I spoke to a sales rep for RSGear. The quote I got for a new terminator transmission was $1695 Plus about $100 to $120 shipping.

Additionally I called a local yard for a dodge dakota bell housing. He wants $150 to remove it from the vehicle and sell it to me. Not sure if that is a good deal or not... Maybe it is considering there aren't many options near me.

And I've compiled my list of manual ZJ items I will need to obtain. Luckily I know where to find one that is mostly intact. Ill update this post with quoted prices plus shipping since its a few hours drive away from me. But who knows, maybe Ill make the trip there too.

Well turns out my bead on the manual ZJ parts didn't pan out.

The manual swap will be on hold until I can locate some of those parts. In the mean time I'm going to get ahold of an hp30 and ford 8.8 and build those out with 4.56 gears, WJ brake swap, and upgraded chromoly axle shafts in the front. I will probably wait to do lockers.

Selling my IRO zj long arms if anyone is interested. Since I'm swapping in a cherokee front end my current long arms aren't going to be compatible. $300 obo.

Well I thought I had a bead on a virgin manual zj but turns out it was missing exactly the parts I wanted lol. I'm going to have to find one, I don't have the work bench or tools to make one. Arguably the pedals are going to be the hardest to get.
