Shoestring, Junk-Yard, Handmade is the theme of my project.

(The sub-theme is "When was your last Tetanus shot?")

The subject of the project is a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, I6 w/SelecTrac.

Before:

Latest work: Freshly painted junkyard brushguard, used fuel tank, new fuel pump.

Known Obstacles:

1. Not running

2. 130K miles

3. Came from NY; lots of rust underneath

4. No maintenance records

5. It's in the next town over. Update: Had it towed to my apartment.

6.

7.

Reasons to take this on:

1. It was free

2. I always wanted a Jeep

3. I like a challenge

4. Need a vehicle for camping and tubing trips

5.

6.

7.

Work I've done so far:

1. Replaced fuel pump and strainers (Bosch from Rock Auto)

2. Replaced fuel tank and skid-plate (Junk-yard)

3. Installed new battery (Duralast)

4. Had it towed to my apartment

Long-term goals:

1. Moderate lift

2. Better wheels and tires

3. Optimized for camping

4.

5.

6.

Good luck with that. I had one of those Jeep projects a couple of years ago that I kicked to the curb in about 11 months as that turd became a money pit. Free is usually free for a reason I found out. I wish you better results than I had...

No photos today:( We're enduring a tarantula rainstorm (hour seven). So I've been looking up all the songs Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys have sampled on youtube for the past three hours. Finally got my teething baby to sleep so I could wash bottles and clean the kitchen. Get paid tomorrow; will see how much is left over after paying bills. My prediction: Not much.

Bump for photos. Finally! Spent the afternoon removing the downpipe and cat from my 2002 Jetta turbo. Replacement parts on the way from germanautoparts.com, should be here Friday. Family coming to visit this weekend, but I should be able to knock out the installation Saturday morning. I should post some pictures of the Jetta on my flickr account... I'm always working on that beast!

Yeah, I don't like the rust either. There's only a couple of bad spots, and it won't get much worse here in central Texas. I just want to get it running and reliable so I can go tubing and camping next summer. And I'll keep a close eye on the budget and post my expenditures in this thread as I go along.

I hope you don't drive with that bottle of brake\power steering fluid stored there.
No way! I hate it when people do that! That's what the milk crate in the back is for. The PO had brake fluid, ATF, crappy oil, and a wad of rags tucked away in various places under the hood. I think this Jeep is gonna love being owned by me. It's like a dog from the pound; it just knows how close to death it was and it's grateful you saved it.

Moderator, can I have this thread moved to the WJ forum? I think I'll get more interested readers and better advice there than in the GC general discussion forum.

Nevermind. I did a little poking around and now I understand why it belongs in the GC forum. I think the way I'll handle it is to append a link to this project thread to my signature, and also link to it from any technical threads I start in the WJ forum.

It runs! Towed it to my regular shop (Automotive Specialists in Round Rock, TX) and they had it running the second day. It was the crankshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor, plus some corrosion (surprise) in the harness. It runs great now and has plenty of power. Time for an oil change and another run to the junkyard for some odds and ends. Need to grab a trailer hitch so I can carry my bikes.
