i found the cause of my bad gas mileage. it wasnt terrible but definetly not as good as it could or shouldve been.

my fuel filter was shot to hell. i mean disgustingly bad.
heres a few pictures of it cut open.

oh i was getting around 12-15 city/highway. im now getting 15-18 city/highway.

and can you say power? first time getting on the freeway after filter change i went from 40 to 70 like it was nothing. thrown back into my seat and left wondering if i was still driving my own car.

I know how the clogged filter feels. I was mid way on a 12hr road trip when my 4.7L WJ started bogging out anytime over 3krpm. I didnt know what was going on until some loony mechanic checked my fuel pressure at Idle then under 3/4 throttle.

Ah man that's great news for mpg with gas prices! Where is the fuel filter at? Atop the gas tank? Hard to replace?

Fuel filter in on driver side of unibody rail towards the back. It is out in the open. It is the filter/regulator all in one. Not too bad to do.

I would imagine just push in the schrader valve on the fuel rail test port up in the engine bay with a rag over it to catch the spray.

This is the best way to relieve most of the pressure.

yea i posted in the what did you do today, but it got drowned out quickly.

i will have to climb under tomorrow and look, i cant remember the brand

I removed the relay fuse and opened the gas cap. Maybe a thimble-full dribbled out.

Shouldn't have, to my extent of knowledge there's a check valve in the tank that will not allow drainback. Just thought about it... Even easier, pull the fuel pump relay or fuse and then crank the jeep over... It may start and stall, good, fuel pressure released. If it doesn't start, good, fuel pressure released lol
