so the xj is going to the scrapper soon. i get 150 for it whether it rolls or not. so i guess i'm gonna keep the HP 30 and clean it up and gear it and eventually swap it into my zj. gonna be my summer project. gonna paint it up real nice too. think i'm gonna use the same hammered black paint i used on my arb bumper. awesome color.

looked at the sheet metal in our garage and decided it was heavy enough for my center console trim bezel
rough fit

needs a little more trimming

mocked into place in my old center console

now its sitting in front of the heater with a coat of primer on it. gonna throw on a few more coats before i paint it.
and i've also been busy breaking loose that pinion nut. got it taken off and put the new one on. heres a couple pics
my glorious work space. yes its cold lol

and the new yoke bolted up with new nut

built in slip yoke on the front ds is frozen so i cant get it to reach the axle yoke now... but its in front of the heater and i'm hoping that will warm it up enough

i'm using the black one. wish i didnt have to trim it though but it'll be better once it has a shift boot(i'm gonna use a crown royal bag haha) the unused mounting hole will be trimmed out to square off the hole for the shift boot. i've put a few coats of primer on it and will be painting it tomorrow. cant wait to have it done

ah... figured that was the case but though you might have found a shifter or console that worked with out having to trim. The sheet metal is going to turn out nice. I assume it will all be the same color (console and metal). The crown bag shifter boot will be a nice tough

ha yeah. it'll be close to the same color. i'm gonna use the same hammered black paint on the bezel piece that i used on my arb. i love that color. wouldnt mind painting my whole jeep with it. i think i'll eventually move my switches to the bezel i made but for now they are staying. seeing as how i'm pretty motivated right now i may start recessing those rear reverse lights in the bumper tonight lol. but yeah i cant wait for the crown shifter boot haha

came up with a design change/addition to the trim bezel which required me to bust out the welder. i know i already had primer on it but felt it was a necessary change

oh and on a side note. i suck at welding thin sheet metal.. burned through in a few spots so i will be busting out the body filler as well to smooth everything out

heres some more progress.
cut along green line

cut out

dont hate. cheapo welder and thin sheet metal plus myself dont mix well. i know they look like crap but it'll clean up well

more ugly welds

and how i left it tonight.

tomorrow i need to grind down and smooth out the topside. throw a little body filler on it to really smooth it out and fill it low spots. then primer, more primer, and paint. then clear. the lip i'm adding is going to go along where was cut on the center console to give the shift boot somewhere to mount to. it should look pretty good when its done

lol i was in a motivated mood last night cuz i had to get the cherokee into the driveway and on jackstands and take the tires to the owner and figured i'm already still up. already warm-ish might as well keep working. only went in cuz i was tired of grinding down the slag and my eyes needed a break from the welding lol. and yeah laying on the tarp in the driveway sucked ***

so i'm really REALLY wanting a rear tire carrier. i'm tired of it being in the cargo area. i wouldnt mind a full tire carrier/bumper combo like CLninja has as its one of the few custom bumpers i'd let within a hundred yards of my zj. but cant afford that nor do i have the skill to make one like that. i love how smunns did his rear tire carrier and retained the stock bumper(even tho its on a dub, that idea could work on a zj) and i kindof like this one made by nevadagary

but i think i want to make a swing down carrier instead of a swing out one. and it would be moved to the left side instead of centered. but i think the first "model" would be a simple hitch mount such as this one.

just to "hone" my welding skills and to see if i could even make one before i try something too complicated
what do yal think
