It has to go at shoulder height behind the seats. You need it at a height where your spine won't compress when you crash.

Well I am going to disappoint everyone here when I say I am just planning on throwing the carpet and stock seats back in. I just got done ripping off the insulation from the bottom of the old carpet, being that is just holding a bunch of water and will mold. I am going to wash the carpet good, and put new insulation over the transmission tunnel to prevent it from getting super hot.

The reason for this is my Jeep is sitting here, undriveable until I decide what to do. Even if I did know what I wanted, I would have to wait at least a week for parts to show up. It does not take long to pull everything out to the point where I am now.

Not sure yet, I saved a piece of the factory insulation, I am going to try and find some similar at the hardware store.

If you have an auto interior/upholstry shop in your town or even a major body shop, they'll usually have the insulation and various carpeting and vinyl on hand in bulk rolls and would probably sell it by the foot/yard. Can probably buy what you're looking for by the yard on ebay too. There's even some selling neoprene if you wanted to experiment with mats and seat covers.

Ya the carpet is ready to go in now, but I cant find insulation.... I will have to check out a car interior place and see what they can do for me. Thanks.

You can see I actually did consider putting new carpet in, but if its just carpet, why not try and clean up the old stuff first? That way it saves the hassle of fitting brand new stiff carpet in the Jeep and cutting all the holes and edges.

The carpet itself had dried in the past couple days, but the insulation which was sealed with plastic and glued to the bottom of it was still soaking wet. I ripped off all I could, and then after taking this picture I actually took the wire wheel to get all the extra that was stuck on there. Turned out really nice actually. No more old insulation!

Soaped the carpet down with the pressure washer...

my experience i had with replacing carpet was with my 87 pontiac fiero. my dad and i were restoring it and decided to buy new carpet for it. it was supposed be a direct fit, there were no fitment holes. it wasnt properly shaped. and was honestly the biggest PITA project on that car, it never ended up fitting right and i couldnt stand it. seeing the progress you made on your factory carpet it looks good man. i know mine could use a tear out and a good wash
