The 35" mickeys and 4.0 did not like eachother. The 4.0 was a good strong reliable engine but it simply did not have the power I was looking for. I looked for a 5.9 grand for a while, and was thinking of swapping over my suspension but did not have 4 grand to buy one... So I bought a donor Jeep. Fully running, 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 5.2. Over 220k on it, but it drove and shifted fine. Plus, I did not like the sound of a 4.0 on a huge Jeep, it needed a nice V8 roar.

Pulled the engine, trans, transfercase, all electrical harnesses, PCM, a/c, radiator, everything....

With the high miles, I wanted to make sure the engine was in good shape. So i regasketed and inspected everything, both heads for straightness and any internals from being damaged.

There is Sir Flex A lot!

Compression tested out well, so I did not replace any rings.
Heads were tested for cracks and warpage, all systems go.
The following parts have been replaced so far.

-Rear Main Seal
-Waterpump
-Intake Manifold Bolts (One broke inside one of the heads)
-Oil Pan gasket
-Lower intake
-Upper intake
-Head Gaskets
-Thermostat
-Thermostat gasket
-Waterpump hoses
-Spark Plugs
-Distributor Cap
-Distributor Rotor
-Fuel injector O-Rings
-Exhaust manifold gaskets

All rusty parts, like valve covers and oil pan were wire wheeled down, and repainted with high temp paint.

I have yet to wheel with the V8, being the last trip was last summer/fall at the customer appreciation.

At IRO we just came out with a new ZJ skid plate, and it works very well (bolts up) to your existing IRO Front LA XMember.

After putting the V8 in, my brand new front driveshaft was 3 inches too long!!!! So after spending $250 on the shaft, I had to get it shortened....

I saw and read all about ZJ V8 Exhaust upgrades, and although I wanted headers I did not want to pay for them. So I did take the step and have an exhaust shop (Reed @ Midas in Shakopee, Thank you) Put in this little section of pipe to get rid of the factory kink.

I needed new tires about two months ago, so while looking I came across the 37's. So why not? I wanted a little more clearance, so I put new springs in. IRO 7" ZJ fronts, no isolator, with BB stacked. And the rear, I took my old 7" fronts and did the good ol ZJ Front to rear! haha I was sitting at 10.5" in the rear, until I cut the coils. It now sits at 8.5" in the rear, 8" in front.

I drove it like that, and finally the vibes started. I guess 7" was the cutoff. I did the IRO Hack N Tap kit, its famous for XJ users, because its cheap and works wonders. For ZJ's, you need a custom driveshaft.

That took care of all the vibes, it was amazing.

Since I am going to school for Automotive, I used it to my advantage. Although the 44re with 220k on it shifted fine, I decided to rebuild it for class credit. I had to buy parts, but it was worth it for the experience too.

So I bought a master rebuild (all new clutches, bands, new intermediate servo, seals) and also a Transgo shift kit.

I feel like I just had the trans out....

O.D Unit, where you need a press. There is an 830 pound spring compressed in there!

While I had the t-case out, why not reseal it and inspect it? It was leaking between the case halves ever so slightly. So I tore it apart, and replaced all of the seals.

Shift Improver kit. Basically corrects all problems the trans is known for, does not make a hard shift.

It was my first time ever rebuilding a transmission, and thankfully it worked!
